I’ve been a little upset for the past few days. I’m currently waitlisted for a professional school. This school has an online forum that’s independent from the school. Recently people who have lower standardized exams and GPA than me were pulled off the wait list while I was left in the dark. I completely understand letting those with higher scores get in but skipping over me to let the people with the lower scores get in ? That completely undermines my work, because this program is difficult to get into. Plus I’m an alumni of this school, I should in theory get first preference since I’m a product of this school, (this was said to me by an admissions counselor). The school hasn’t said anything because I’m technically still waitlisted but I have a strong feeling DACA might be playing a role in their decision. It would make sense that they would rather have a citizen or a PR. And yes I’m waitlisted so I still have a chance but school starts in a month, it’s nearly impossible for me to get in. The class is full, it’ll take a miracle for me to get in.

This has really been messing with my mental state. I came so close to my dream just to fail. I can’t go thru with this mental torture another application cycle, I’ve already applied 3 cycles in a row, and to as many schools that “accept DACA” which is not a lot in this field.

All of us dreamers know we are at a disadvantage which is why we aim higher than everyone else. We’re all such fucking over achievers that it’s almost unbelievable. But damn, it hurt so fucking much when we fail even after all that work, even after scoring higher than others.

DACA or not, I don't think it matters that much when it comes to school, unlike applying to jobs. There may be other factors in play other than exam scores. Keep your chin up.

The good news is that DACA probably plays less of a role in this specific predicament. The bad news is that your race still plays a big role in acceptance to many programs and jobs.

If not for who I am, I’d probably have my manager’s job.

Idfk dude. I remember when I was interviewing for a dev job right after I graduated college, told the recruiter that I have DACA, explained what it is, and I'll definitely have work authorization pretty much indefinitely (5 years later I'm still right). Dude literally went from wanting to hire me to trying to hang up without seeming too rude in the span of a minute.

He did reach out to me a few years later and I told him to go fuck himself, he's had his chance to hire me, it was like 2 years later, still on DACA, asshole. I wonder if he remembered me.

These days I just lie that I'm an LPR if questioned and let the HR clean the mess after an offer. I can also weasel out that I have a green card petition pending and I'm waiting on that and there's no reason to get dropped by a recruiter who isn't sure how to work with this, which is true, the fucking I-360 is still pending.

300IQ right here, get a load of this dude lmfaooo

Dont discuss your immigration status to your employer, period.

The company i work for requires people to travel, even then i never mentioned DACA. I just told them Im keeping myself mainly based in the US.

I still managed to keep myself based in my state.

Well genius, interviewer asks you directly what status you're in. What do you say?

You aren't owed anything by anyone, and maybe they had lower scores and grades but they made up for it in experience or something else.

You can't expect to be in just cause you scored higher. Score higher, get more relevant experience. Ask what you need to improve on.

Lastly, I never discuss immigration status at a workplace. Not even with HR. Let them deal with the radioactivity of terminating me solely on DACA.

HR is to protect the company. Lastly, this is a temporary setback.
