Dear fellow Dreamers,

I will be marrying my fiancee who is an American citizen and I will eventually apply for adjustment of status. I am Mexican and therefore all my documents have two last names (including my mom's) - I will eventually would like to drop my mom's last name and just keep one last name.
We are currently filling out the marriage license application and it asks what names we will be using and allows both of us to change them if we wish to do so. My question is, should I be providing First name & Last name (only the one I want to keep?) or should I be filling out the form with my two last names and deal with name change later?
For those who have married and eventually dropped the second last name, what is the process like?

Thanks guy.
Any input is appreciated.

You should really ask your lawyer that...If i had to guess, I wouldn't change a single thing until you have adjusted your status. All it takes is one little discrepancy and they'll hold up an application.

Doing a name change when getting married is super easy and one of the easiest ways to do it. All you have to do is enter your current name and your new name on the marriage license.

When you renew your DACA or do your AOS, just use your new name and provide a copy of your marriage certificate that will show your old name and new name.

After the marriage and once you have your marriage certificate, you will then have to go to all the various offices/agencies that have you on file and update your name... Social Security, DMV, employer, bank, credit cards, insurance, etc. All of that can be a pain.

I kind of did the opposite of what you did. I got married late last year and hyphenated my last name adding my husband's last name to mine. He did the same. My marriage certificate shows all of that.

Good luck with the wedding and your eventual AOS!
