Type in your receipt number from the application, it should have updated information on there.

date confirmation was received from the former INS ?

someone can clarify.

you can also check the visa bulletin for latest processing dates after checking up on your case. i m also assuming you have a 245-I judging by the "8-9 years ago"

Don't worry, there are all types of quirks in immigration law that one is often unaware of so it is fine.

A 245-I lets you adjust your status in the United States without having to go back to your country. Without it, you cannot adjust your status here (even if you get married, you need to go back to your country...) I think any papers under I-130/I-140 etc. filed before April 2001 are eligible.

Say for example, if my parents filed their papers through my U.S. citizen grandmother (I-130) on Jan 00 but fell out of status along the way for whatever reason. They could then pay fines of $1000 and adjust status when years later a visa became available to them. But if one of their daughters became a citizen (my sister), well at that point, they don't need to. There are all sorts of little exemptions and tiny details here and there.

This looks like a good summary:
http://www.immihelp.com/gc/life245.html

First you need to find the date on your petition reply from the former INS and see the status of your case. Then, look up the processing times at the Visa Bulletin to kind of gauge when you would be eligible to file for a PR.
