I've heard that the INS has now given some police the authority to basically be immigration officers. In other words, if they find someone, they now have the authority to take someone in for that alone. Idk exactly which officers now have this authority, I just kind of heard it somewhere, but I'm not sure if it's true. I heard that one of the first places it's being implimented is Las Vegas.

QUESTION:
Coming from California to Vegas, are there any checkpoints??? We're going to vegas in february, and idk what to expect if these officers now have that authority...

good question... I am also wondering... would they check everyone in the car? What if the driver is legal citizen, are they going to demand ID of everyone inside the vehicle?

BTW don't get drunk and lose too much money

who told you this?? I live in vegas, there are "NO CHECKPOINTS" while traveling, at least not that i know of, i have traveled from LA to Las Vegas, by car and by greyhound numerous times, i have never been stopped neither have other drivers been stopped.this INCLUDES the 101, 99, 5 pretty much all the big freeways connecting Nor Cal to So Cal and 15, which connects CA to Vegas. I dont think Vegas Metro can take you in for being illegal, Ive never heard of such a thing, in the past couple yrs. sure they will take in illegals, for making fake ID's etc. and they even took in a housekeeper at a big hotel, who was working under false documents. she got caught but they let ICE/immigration deal with it, they no longer had jurisdiction. A lot of the times cops will take someone in, but technically they dont have the authority to charge them for being illegal, so they get their info, call ICE but it takes them a long time to come, so they just let them go. i was once asked by a cop for ID, and gave him my passport, said nothing else. The only place i know where ICE might be lurking is at the airports, if security suspects something, especially false documents or expired passports, they wont let you go through, or they let ICE deal with it.

*You have nothing to worry about when driving out here, so many ppl drive out here for the weekend, especially from L.A. just make sure its not you driving lol , b/c CHP or NHP, can stil fine you for not having a DL.

Lol, no no no. I'm a legal citizen, born here, caucasian...etc.

Someone in the car will also be.

We're all going for a wedding there. XD Medieval wedding style and it's going to be this giant family friend thing.

So yeah, just curious.

I actually heard this from my boyfriend who read it somewhere in a newspaper that either they're going to have a meeting for this or they already did, that they gave police the authority to be immigration officers as well, but it didn't seem likely to me, that's all...

thanks. =]

I have never seen any checkpoints around there. I drove from L.A. ---> Vegas ---> Grand Canyon and then back to L.A. again. The only checkpoint was a non-immigration-related one ( at least I think LOL ) by the dam on the border of NV and AZ. After we passed that one I freaked (this was before hubby got his VISA!!) and realized how stupid I was by taking him into Arizona. Luckily northern Arizona has no checkpoints.. and neither does the Pheonix area apparently cuz we drove through there on the way back from Mexico. The only checkpoints I saw were eastbound out of El Paso on the way to Houston, and one westbound I believe somewhere around Las Cruces, NM. Let me tell you, even with a valid visa to show them it is SCAREY !!!!!!!!!!!!

There's a checkpoint on the 5 coming from LV to LA, about 15 miles from LV to be exact, but they only ask you if you have seeds or fruit in the car (apparently the don't like gays).
