Will Obama really prioritize the DREAM Act?

Hi everyone,

I want to see the DREAM Act passed as soon as possible for myself, my friends, and all of you. However, I just don't know how quickly Obama would do this. The economy and Iraq War are the highest priorities, and he isn't also directly accountable to us since we can't participate electorally. Latinos as a group also prioritize the economy right now so there is reduced salience for Obama to take immediate action. Also, this is such a divisive issue and addressing it so soon might reduce the bipartisan support obama wants so much.

I don't want to be a downer but I just want to know if its really realistic to expect him to take the immediate action we all want, like BAMN calling for it to be enacted within the first 100 days.

I was wondering the same thing. I try not to get my hopes up... but I do hope that 2009 will be the year that I can finally become a resident.

Something about you just doesn't seem right. The dream act is not a divisive issue, only the anti-immigrant nuts make a big deal about it.

yeah i agree with lib. First of all, this is a issue that is very popular with the latino voters. Second, I'm sure Senator Durbin will reintroduce it to the senate again this year and since Obama has publicly supported the Dream Act during the primaries, I can definitely see him supporting it now. If he doesn't, he risks inflaming the latino voters who overwhelminly helped him win in key battleground states. Something about you definitely doesn't seem right.

I see that your a little impatient right now we all are at times, But you need to relax and take a breather. The numbers are in our favor in the House and Senate and we got the White House.

You are completely missing my point, and I don't know why you're so quick to call me a "troll" and that I don't "seem right." All I'm saying is that any immigration-related issue isn't his highest priority, especially since all the polls say that the economy is the number one issue for Latinos. I'm not saying that it's not going to be introduced, I'm just saying that it probably won't happen as quick as we would like. He basically hasn't said anything formal about immigration ever since he got elected. Is there something wrong with what I just said, or do you find me "not right" again?

also what i meant by bipartisan support isn't support among latinos, but support among everybody- he's accountable to everyone and almost everyone can agree that the economy and the war in Iraq new immediate fixing, buts it mostly those of us who are most affected by immigration that actually care. he would be more popular by addressing those two issues first.

right, of course. Economy and War would be his first priority. But among immigration, Dream is likely to be the first priority before other immigration bills.

Also, most people (including us) are expecting something big out of Obama as soon as he gets inaugurated. Even CNN and news channels are talking about how Obama has to do something big and are expecting a big round of actions from the get go. We are hoping that Dream would fall along somewhere in that line of action and it has a pretty good chance of doing so.

Because it promotes real change and is something he supported throughout the campaign. Of course there's still the chance of him turning around and stabbing us in the back by never talking about Dream again till second term. Which is very possible knowing how politically sharp and edgy he can be, he's a politician after all and a pretty darn good one.

yeah i agree that Obama is a politician but I think he really understands the value of Education. I have been reading his books plus a biography of him by David Mendell and you can just see how much he values education and his motivation to help people. I dont know guys maybe i'm just idolizing him. Sigh. Fuck I'm gonna be soo disappointed if he does stab us though...
