Ok,

It is my first post, but I am assuming since you guys are here, most of you are students in a similar situation so I won't go through all the "this is unfair, I came here as a pre-teen, am a great student and now can't do anything" deal.

Cutting straight to the point, what are the alternatives for getting a license as an undocumented alien in New York? I was told that it was possible by a few people, and looking at the DMV website, I would be able to produce the 6 points necessary by giving my passport, bills, SSN inelibility letter, school Id's, etc. Yet, I was researching online and a some people posted that you DO have to proove that you are here legally at some point in the process.

So, what is the verdict- in NY, is there a way for illegals to obtain a license?

If not, are there any other states were we can go to where there are loopholes with regard to proving legal status? I heard Hawaii and a few other, but is going to another state actually feasible?

-- Honestly, I am sick and tired of this situation. I have been pondering moving back to my country and continuing college there. I am 20 and have never driven a car or gotten a decent job. If getting a license turns out to be impossible, this might be the last nail in the coffin for me.

Thanks guys.

You can't get one in New York. A friend of mine accumulated the 6 points needed (brought along the SSN ineligibility letter) and they asked him to prove he was here legally. After he did, he got a temporary NY State ID which expires on the day his visa expires. So, there really is no way to get one in NY if you are undocumented.

However, I know that in Washington (this one is definitely possible), Oregon, New Mexico, Utah, Hawaii and some other states you could obtain a DL. Granted, you have to have certain paperwork, but it is doable.

I see, do you need proof of residence in those states? I remember reading that some states don't require proof of residence- does anyone know which states?

Also, how do you know about washington for sure?

Thanks.

To my knowledge, all states require you to have proof of residency.

It is true, Washington is the easiest place to get a license as of now. Everybody goes there.

i sent you a pm about it
