I have been paying full tuition for a while and it is getting harder to cope with the rising dollar over the past couple of months.

How much are you guys paying and how do you cope with it?

Can I whine for a few seconds? I don't wanna pay 3000 bucks for 3 classes!!!!!!!! AHHHH I HATE PAYING INTERNATIONAL RATES.

But anyway, I work. If I can't afford to pay for school, I take less classes. Although I've always taken 2 per semester 'cause it's so expensive. But I'm able to take 3 this semester and I'm super excited, haha.

It sucks, but that's life. It'll be worth it in the end

2250 per class. I'm only able to take one class next semester because it's so expensive, but luckily my aunt pays for my education. Only 7 more classes and I'm done!

I don't want to make another thread, so I will ask a work related question:

what happens if you put your individual tax payer number instead of a social on a job application, or on your information form for a job ? I mean, are they going to know (aside from the fact that it starts with a 9) that it is not a social or can you get a way with it and keep the job?

I am very pressed right now with tuition (I pay unaided/full resident rates in NY) and need to get a job but I think working off the books is not an option here since it is a suburbian area, unless you are a cook/contractor or something along those lines.

Short answer, yes they will know. Despite IRS's official motto of not sharing information with other government branches, there have been times where upon the discovery of an ITIN on a W2, that information has been forwarded to INS/ICE.

The longer answer is that it's simply not worth it due to a couple of reasons. First of all if your employer isn't privy to it first, IRS is certainly going to be. Since your ITIN isn't in the SS database, a no-name match letter will be issued and then sent back to the employer and you. At which point your employer will have to ask you to either straighten this out in something like 30 days i think, or else he/she will have to let you go. Which doesn't sound all that bad really, however take into account that at this point there will be a record of you trying to work while undocumented. And since that is obviously a no no, come DREAM time it may cause you trouble, assuming ICE doesn't pick you up first.

Really, there are so many things that can go wrong for you either now or in the future that it's simply not worth going through with it. Find some other way of making cash, anything but putting your ITIN on a W2.

Interesting little factoid too, you can legally use your tax id to work for yourself, but not be employed with it. Basically you're allowed to start your own business, but not take another "American's" job.

It's grad school rates...but I don't pay for it. All of you who have to work to pay for school... I admire you so much. It's so difficult to be in this situation especially without financial support.

String, thank you so much for the information.

So I guess the way to go is finding a job off the books. It is definitely not hard in NYC and places like Miami, etc where employers take advantage of it. I used to work at a supermarket off the books in NYC, made minimum wage, of course. Now I live in a suburbian area and it seems like I have no options!

I am a full time student and the tuition just went up recently, I am very tight on money right now. My parents support me with foreign money and we are all feeling the crunch.

Which schools do you guys go to?
