If you happened to live in the south, and i mean the deep south, you probably are aware that immigration laws are pretty tough and unfair at the moment.

so what I'm trying to get started is maybe a Dream Act student/immigration coalition from the south ( South and North Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Tennessee, Mississippi, Louisiana, Kansas, Arkansas, Kentucky, Oklahoma and Missouri)

why only those states?

A: because immigrants are not a big part of the population in those states (compared to California, New York, Illinois. etc) and i feel we are being left out and being run over by the local media everyday.

so feel free to message me and let's get to work!!!

Also please post any local pro-immigration/dream act organization, from the south, in this thread so we can contact them and be on the same page for next year.

thanks.

Southern immigration groups are hard to find. I tried to google them and nothing helpful popped out. Here's what MAGraduate wrote on organizations from other areas and maybe calling them can help you find groups in your area (especially those from Texas):

Quote:
We are well-connected to student groups working on the ground at this point and to major immigration organizations (NILC, NCLR) who can handle the press and media. We have contacts with people working with kids in the barrios of New York, Indiana and so on. We have lawyers from the National Guild in my backpocket ready to come to my defense and to disseminate information to clients. That's precisely what the DreamActivist project is about now that it is a national communications intermediary for the United We DREAM coalition:

o NAKASEC (Chicago, LA)
o University Leadership Initiative (Texas)
o Fair Immigration Reform Movement (LA) -Myron
o Casa de Maryland
o National Immigration Law Center (D.C.)
o Voces de la Frontera (Wisconsin)
o CHIRLA/CA DREAM Network
o National Council of La Raza (D.C.)
o NY State Youth Leadership Council
o DREAMactivist.Org
o Colorado Immigrant Rights Coalition (Denver, CO)
o UCLA Labor Center
o Brown University
o United States Student Association
o Student Labor Action Project (D.C.)
o First Focus (D.C.)
o Students Working for Equal Rights
o University of California
o Citizen Orange (ProImmigrant Blog)
o Student Immigrant Movement
o Missouri Activist
o National Immigration Forum
o Center for American Progress
o New World Foundation
o Minnesota Freedom Network
o El Puente/Latino Youth Collective of Indiana
I know that wasn't much help but its something.

The American Civil Liberties Union has a chapter on North Carolina. They usually have a branch for immigration rights. They helped another immigration group in North Carolina called the 1st of May Unidos (something something) is in ACLU web page. Probably many of the groups are really grassroots without their non profit status. While searching for groups some times the words social justice are better. For example, the Catholic Church is heavely involved in immigration rights but their work is under social justice. Hope this can help in something

I got this email today from Clinic. Clinic is a group from the catholic chuch. It is co-sponsor from another group that is pro-immigrant in North Carolina. One of the reasons, why so many groups like to work with churches is because they are flooded with people. If you want to send a message to a group of people without the minute man at your event. It is often wise to give it at the spanish service. Once it gets to the people, the word of mouth starts to kick in. Hope this is worth for something.

Winning Senators and Reps from the South would be huge.

Groups that I know from the South:

SEIRN-southeast coalition on immigrant rights

North Carolina:
El Pueblo

Georgia:
GALEO
Students for Latino Empowerment (University of Georgia)

Florida (not really the south...a different world altogether)
SWER/Florida Immigrant Coalition.

I have a strong interest in the south as well and will be traveling to North Carolina in March.

If you could find more groups, since you are on the ground, that will be super helpful!

SWER had an interest to develop a coalition in the south...Please PM me for more info...
