PIX NEWS is being told that Congresswoman Kirsten Gillibrand is the reported choice of Governor David Paterson to fill the U.S. Senate seat vacated by Hillary Clinton. Two Congressional sources say members of the New York delegation have been invited to join Governor Paterson for the announcement in Albany at noon tomorrow. http://www.gillibrand.house.gov/inde...d=226&Itemid=1 " I am firmly against providing amnesty to illegal immigrants.......In addition, I am a sponsor of the SAVE Act" http://www.wpix.com/landing/?Confirm...55&feedID=1404 WTF??????

First things first, Don't Panic! (ok, I'm a little bit panicked).

Ms. Gillibrand represents a conservative district in Upstate New York, and my hope is that she moves left and more liberal when she represents the entire state of New York. More liberal New York politicians are also promising to primary her (if she is the pick), and hopefully, that will scare her into moving left on immigration and other issues.

Still, red flags galore. There will have to be a lobbying push made for her, if she is indeed picked, instead of taking the NY vote for granted. Ugh, why did Caroline drop out .

I sounded the alarm a few weeks ago on this kirsten gilibrand character. Why in the world would they pick a conservative to represent the state of new york?

Quote:
While some insist Gillibrand is the Governor's choice, another New York Congressman cautioned tonight that "It's not a done deal." He claims there is some political in-fighting and ongoing conversations with the Governor. There appears to be some challenge to Gillibrand's voting record
The article said Clinton wanted her to get picked, she better change her stance on immigration when she is in the senate.

I've read Gov. Paterson likes Gillibrand's strong fundraising skills and can bring in Upstate votes for his re-election.

As for us, she'll have a speech tomorrow, and we'll see what she says (if she is the pick). I have faith that she will have to be more liberal to win a NY Democratic primary. There's also Sen. Schumer who can persuade Gillibrand to vote the right way.

Here's some more info on Gillibrand and why she may be chosen,

Quote:
The daughter of a well-known state lobbyist, Gillibrand has served less than three years in the House, but is already regarded as a formidable fundraiser.

Both Clinton and the state’s senior senator, Charles Schumer, are favorably disposed to her candidacy, Democrats say. And Paterson has repeatedly said he preferred to pick a woman to replace the most successful female presidential candidate in American history.

Gillibrand brings several important political attributes critical to Patterson, who became governor when Eliot Spitzer resigned and has never topped a statewide ticket, when both run for their offices in 2010: She represents a relatively conservative part of upstate the governor hopes to woo, she's a formidable fundraiser with connections to Hillary Clinton's cash-generating apparatus and she's a woman in a state that prides itself of inclusiveness.

Still, Gillibrand’s pro-gun positions have aroused opposition in a state where most Democrats, and many Republicans, favor stringent gun control measures. She earned the NRA’s top rating last year and backed a repeal of Washington D.C.’s hand gun ban—even submitting an amicus brief to the Supreme Court in support of pro-gun groups.

“She would not be my choice and I talked to the governor about it two weeks ago,” McCarthy told Politico last night. “This morning I basically started getting calls saying he was going to choose her and I had to speak out, even at the risk of alienating the governor. I do not believe New York should have a senator who has these positions… I just came through the 15th anniversary of when my husband was killed and I my son was maimed from the shooting.”

Several anti-gun groups, including New Yorkers Against Gun Violence, spent Thursday calling Paterson’s office to urge him to pick someone else.
EDIT: Oh I forgot, President Obama can also convince Gillibrand to support his initiatives and Sen. Reid can apply pressure to go along with the Senate Democratic caucus. She seems like a smart politician so she must take these into account especially as NY politician. All is not lost (I hope)!

some comments from the huffington post readers.
Quote:

The thing is, a LOT of NYers don't even know who she IS, how the heck is she supposed to hold onto the seat when 80% of her district are Palinite Republicans?

Caroline K would have been able to hold onto the seat and win the special election thanks to the President Obama fundraising machine.
Quote:
Wow...what a h orrid choice. This lady is very conservative leaning, also she is not known! If you are going to fill the most known woman in the world's senate seat then it should be someone with also big name status...
Quote:
and what a slap in the face to Hillary, appointing a conservative WOMAN to fill her shoes, just like the Republicans picking Sarah Palin to get Hillary voters!

Paterson is not only a bl ind f ool, but a s exist blind f ool as well.
Quote:

Yup, I know you're glad of maintaining the status quo of having the same corrupt politicians who support the special interest groups instead of the state of NY.

And I hope you are satisfied with this seat going Republican in 2010, since Gillibrand can NOT win statewide, her district is 80% Republican.
I hope we don't lose a dream act vote.

So it's all about the gov getting re- elected then? If she doesn't change her stance on immigration, gun rights etc, she is not going to win re-election.

From the daily kos

Quote:
This will undoubtedly disappoint many progressives, but there is certainly a bright side as well.
First, Gillibrand's district leans Republican, and gave Bush 54% of the vote in 2004. It's quite likely she'll be a bit more liberal representing the entire state - a similar thing happened to Debbie Stabenow of Michigan, a moderate Democrat in the House who became significantly more liberal in the Senate.
Second, it's very likely Gillibrand will run the risk of a serious, well-funded primary challenge if she doesn't position herself with the mainstream of the New York Democratic Party.
She's worked very hard to become a United States Senator, and has earned the reputation of a coming political star.
If she wants to ensure she keeps it - and keeps her Senate seat - she will need to slide somewhat to the left.
I hope they are right!!

I don't think that commenter at HuffPo is right. People over at Swing State Project are saying Gillibrand's district is R+3, which I assume is 53% Repub and 47% Dem.

Basically, we went from a guaranteed Yes Dream vote to a persuadable/maybe Dream vote. Hopefully, we can secure her vote quickly and not have to work too hard for it.

Keep in mind that our current governor is an absolute tool and moron, otherwise the people of New York do not support conservatives being chosen.

It's also doubtful that Senator Schumer is too happy about this.
