So I looked at the recent "Flying to Seattle" thread, but was wondering if anyone could give me your thoughts on my particular situation. I am going to be flying to LAX airport next week and this is the first time I cannot fly with valid DL. I am thinking about flying with my recently expired DL (expired end of December and I couldn't renew cause now TX requires proof of status). I think using expired DL is best option because I can say I hadn't noticed and have other IDs I can show (College ID w pic, Debit card no pic, SAMs card w pic, and Nursing license no pic).
Other option is to fly with valid foreign passport but no visa. I am reluctant to use this method since it makes people question my status more than an expired license. I also have SS card that I could take with me as supporting ID for DL, but I am hesitant to use since it says not valid for work. That may also prompt them to ask about status.
Sorry to make it so complicated, but as you all know, things can get complicated with our situation so I would appreciate any input.

When you have to present the form of identification, I think the best is to give them your VALID (no expired passport) because on the TSA website they do not mention it has to has a valid visa.
Check it out at:

The TSA are not ICE so its not their job to look for a valid visa but sometimes they do it anyway and it can be risky.
This TSA website also doesn't mention that the ID must be valid. So, if I were you, I would just call them and tell them that I have a flight in 6 hours and my only ID is my Driver's license and I just noticed that its not valid, maybe it will be ok and maybe not.

If its ok and you can use your expired driver's license to fly then do it, they just need a proof of identity, so I don't think that because your driver's license expired they will think that you are not who you say you are.

I went from Vegas to Florida and back, and I showed my foreign passport. They only looked at the first page (where your picture is), but...this was in 2006.

You..cannot use expired documents to fly, and that's that. It will be more suspicious to the TSO if you have the expired DL, than if you have the valid foreign passport.

I fly a lot, so trust me on this. If your passport is valid, the TSO will match the information on the ticket to the information in the passport. They should not be checking for a visa. Most of them can't even recognize a valid visa. If they do, you can complain, because as said above..they do not have the required "training" to act as immigration officers.

Plus, you could be a Dual Citizen flying with their non-American passport for all they know..

Don't go with an expired license....
It's perfectly ok to show them your passport.... they will only look at the first page (the one that has your name and photo on it)
I fortunatelly have a license..but my sister does not and she always fly using her foreign passport....

So according to what you two are saying, flying is safer then taking the train or the bus? I know that Amtrak and Greyhound are dangerous because there are raids by border control (yea, I know, border control can't ask for documents from people that are INSIDE the US but they still stop buses and do that, they check passengers visas although its not their job).

Flying to Puerto Rico - should it even be an option:
on a Valid College Id? (I added this due to one of the earlier posts)
on a Valid Passport with NO Visa?
Your thoughts, anyone?
Thanks for your time

When I first came to the United States I came through Puerto Rico at least twice & even back then waaaay before 9/11 the place was crawling with CBP officers.PR,should be an absolute no go if you're not legally in the country.

The CBP presence is very high due to the large amount of illegal immigration from Haiti & the Dominican Republic not to mention they also have to protect some of the smaller islands like the US Virgin Islands.
