Hey everyone,

I'm a part of student gov't at my community college and we were invited to this one conference will be held in march 21~24. But unfortunately, I cannot able to attend this conference but I would to share some of the great news about our future!

USSA is the nation's oldest and largest student-run student-led organization that mobilizes students from across the nation to win concrete victories on student issues. We are recognized as the official student voice in higher education by the White House, U.S. Congress and the Department of Education.

The conference opportunity is the 40th Annual Grassroots Legislative Conference and National Student Lobby Day in March. At this conference we will be honoring legislators who are allies to students and champions of legislation that affect higher education but most importantly, we will be educating students on legislative issues and how to lobby. On the last day of the conference we will be mobilizing students to Congress and lobby legislators on student issues.

Over the summer, students decide on what particular issue they will organize around. This past summer, students chose six campaigns. Some for example are the Federal DREAM Act, Budget & Appropriations for Fiscal Year 2009, Veteran's Reprieve Act, Free Community Colleges, to name a few.

Most of the college including my community college is working on passing the Dream Act. It seems to me UC Berkeley has been working really hard to pass the DREAM ACT!!! I feel really good about thiss!!!

Those of you guys who want to attend this conference go this website:

PM me if you have a more Q

I didn't have the time to really give my two cents in the past about this thread. THIS IS AWESOME. The credentials you gave are terrific and the organization is pretty cool.

I understand that this organization is in every university/community college or it can be since is recognize by the goverment. Thus, many of us can simply go to our local organization in our local school and be part thus furthering our Dream Act agenda.

One thing few people understand is that if you volunteer in an organization, you have a lot of power about the priorities of the organization. Simply because you are working for free and usually it is the meaty work. If they pay you a wage, you are bound to their agenda, if your time is for free, they have to respect your two cents. If they don't, walk away, because the world is full of organizations that want your free work.

It is really hard to start your own group. Even with a great manual. It is hard. You still need the loving hand of an experience trainer to show you the way. Thus, groups like this are very important because they have experience people to guide you by the hand.

btw, you do not need to share your dreamer status with the world. They do not need to know your most sacred inner reasons. Only that you want to help. Many people just want to help and you can be one of them.

Also, if the organization is good. You are going to walk away with important skills, such as networking and team work. It is closer to work than many think and even if the Dream Act does not pass, it is not a waste of time because you will learn good skills for sure.
