Hey DAP's ...

I am wondering if you guys know any insurance companies that may
accept the International Driver's Permit holder?

And is it possible to purchase a car with this permit/along with original driver license from the foregin nation?

I live in N.Y.C.

Thanks much!

You can not purchase the International Drivers Permit,
However You can apply and obtain it in your country only by paying fees.
of course you have to have your valid driver's license in your country.

I've heard a lot about the International Driving License...good and bad things. What is it good for? Ex. If you get pulled over, do you think it'd help?

I once heard a sheriff saying , (actually 2...from different towns) that they hate those kind of licenses...everyone can purchase one...they are only valid if you have a license at your home country and it is to be used only with your unexpired visa...so I don't think it works for us....They said people with no drivers license should drive with their passports...Here in MA it's pretty safe to drive with a passport...sometimes they only ask you to go home...and don't even give you a ticke or a court date (I guess it depends on the officer...)
As to registering a car ...at least here in Massachusetts we can...and there's also a few insurance companies that accepts international licenses.. you should go to a insurance company and ask them....

I would like to clairify my self once again about this International Driver's Permit.
It is not the International Driver's License that you can purchase through the website.
It is called the International Driver's Permit not a license, you must have your valid driver's license from your country. It can be used to rent a car (budget, enterprise and such).
So it is not illegal. My uncle is a New york State Trooper and he infact told me that it is okay to drive with the International Drivers Permit.

Since nobody seems to have an idea, I guess I should call around some insurance companies to find out.

Thanks for your help !!

Insurance companies will not insure you unless you have a US driver's license. I think that you can rent a car with an international license, but it's expensive.

If this license is OK to drive, just put this car on someone else's name and if he insures it with his US issued driver's license and register it then you could drive it and then it's like you are driving someone else's car and it's legit as long as your "international license" allows you to drive.

Or just go to another state and get a driver's license there, register your car there and then take your car and drive it in your state.

It can be used to drive legally but just not in every state. If you guys are curious, google it... Not long ago I found a list of states that accept it. It is definitely obtainable but the downside is that it is only good for a year. After that I don't know if you'd be able to renew it.

This only applies to you if you're from Mexico:

http://foros.directorio.com.mx/eve/f...2/m/3271080851

They link this website:

http://www.licenciainternacional.com.mx/

It sounds like a legit site. They say they are authorized to give such a permit. Be careful though, many of those international license sites are a scam.
