Obama's Aunt Back In Hub, Facing Deportation

I know that the President said that he supports immigration reform, but I think his first test to that commitment will be how his Aunt's case will proceed. The reason for this is that immigration judges & the Board of Immigration Appeals are under the authority of the Executive not the judicial branch.

Zeituni Onyango fled to Cleveland last fall after news reports surfaced that she was living illegally in the United States.

Obama said he has not been involved in her case and that it should run its ordinary course.

Onyango, 56, a Kenyan immigrant, was first ordered to be deported in 2004. The half-sister of Obama's late father was instructed to leave the country four years ago by an immigration judge who rejected her request for asylum from her native Kenya.

Kenya is in eastern Africa between Somalia and Tanzania. The country has been fractured in violence in recent years, including a period of two months of bloodshed after December 2007 that killed 1,500 people.

It was unclear why Onyango's request for asylum was rejected in 2004.

A spokeswoman for U.S. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement has said the government does not comment on an individual's citizenship status or immigration case.
