Rep. Frederick Stephen Upton (R-MI)

Do this to help:

  1. Learn how to find reliable information about a legislator's stance on the DREAM Act.
  2. Use the edit this page link at the bottom of the page to include your findings.
  3. Have some cake; you just helped the DREAM Act campaign!

I'm cross posting on the taking action thread....

I called right now, the person who answered said he'd never even HEARD of the DREAM Act. He transferred me to the staffer who handles education. He didn't say the Congressman would or would not support it, but he did call it an "amnesty." He also said he saw no evidence any immigration matter would come up this Congress(!!). I'd say that this office is ripe for pressure, and given that there are colleges in the district, Rep. Upton might be persuaded.

I also found this article, which suggests he's a possibility:

http://www.mlive.com/news/kalamazoo/index.ssf/2010/02/immigration_reform_sought_by_b.html

"Ed Sackley, a district representative for U.S. Rep. Fred Upton, R-St. Joseph, attended the event and said afterward reform means different things to different people. But, he said, Upton has long been behind major proposals that are consistent with the type of reform sought by the Michigan Organizing Project and Reform Immigration for America.

Sackley said an idea such as a “guest-worker” program, where immigrants would be allowed to work for different farmers during different growing seasons is an example of the reform that Upton favors.

“Fred is in favor of securing our borders, but he does not support deportation,” Sackley said."

Visited his official page couldn't find a clear stance on Immigration. Under National Security it does say he supports securing the border and to put a stop on illegal immigration. However, I was able to find his voting record and according to that he seems to mostly likely vote nay. He voted nay on the DREAM Act in December 2010, and also voted Yea on several bills that were against illegal immigration.
