Democrats Say They Will Re-Introduce DREAM Act!

What happens to a DREAM Act deferred? In an election year, it gets re-fought.

This week, Democrats say they will try once again to advance legislation that would give some young undocumented immigrants a chance to live legally in the U.S.*

The Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors (or DREAM) Act would provide a road to citizenship to certain undocumented immigrants who arrived in the U.S. as children. First introduced to the Senate in 2001, it was blocked in the Senate in December.

Sen. Dick Durbin of Illinois plans to file a new DREAM Act bill on Wednesday. In the House, Rep. Howard Berman of California plans to file similar legislation.

Generally, to qualify the young immigrants must have a high school diploma or the equivalent and have spent two years in college or the military. They must have been under 16 when they arrived in the U.S.

At least one Republican, Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen of Florida, is co-sponsoring the House bill.

The bill filings would follow a speech Tuesday in Texas on immigration by President Barack Obama.

After the obama speech in El Paso and after the new speaker boehner said legislation didn't have a chance. I wonder what will happen with these bills...

That's the immigration speech Obama should've gave during his State of the Union. Better late than never I suppose.

We lost the battle, not the war.

Yes, he put extra emphasis on the Dream Act this time.

I think Durbin and Berman should wait until after there are efforts to pass or we see what happens with CIR . . . I don't know guys, what do you think?

I disagree. The POTUS is using the political leverage he got from killing Bin Laden. The timing is right, but it's still far from a sure thing.

Re: Democrats Say They Will Re-Introduce DREAM Act!

Imo,timing is always subjective and there are oppotunities that can come up at any moment. However, considering the current Congress the issue to me still seems to me dead until the House is under Democrat control again and preferably with a superlative number of Democrats as well.

paleale 05-10-2011 05:09 PM

Re: Democrats Say They Will Re-Introduce DREAM Act!

^ Yup. We shouldn't expect it to pass, and I don't think Washington does either. But there are tons of Freshman members in this congress, and IMO, we need to get a record of how they will vote on this issue before the 2012 elections. And if it is to be reintroduced in this congress, the timing is now, because Obama's approval rating is sky high.

But the Republicans have to worry about losing hispanic votes don't you think? They might just cooperate and work with the President.

Senator Durbin on a roll on twitter. Top stuff from the champion!!

Our military needs the thousands of bright young men and women who will be eligible to serve when we pass the #DREAMact.

Take a look at this slideshow of #DREAMact kids http://1.usa.gov/l4lYXI they are honor roll students, athletes, artists & valedictorians

Thousands of #DREAMact kids who have done nothing wrong live in fear of deportation. They should be able to contribute to their country.

Immigrant children that grew up in this country should be allowed to call the US home. We need to pass the #DREAMact.

#DREAMact kids are not a drain on our society; they are tomorrow’s doctors, firefighters, soldiers and senators.

the only way Dream Act can pass in this congress is as an amendment as part of other bill. Not as a stand-alone.

Guys, Obama doesn't give a flying beep about us DREAMers. He wants latino votes. Let's just call this what it is: a political ploy to generate latino support.

Obama needs to step up on this issue and use his executive power to grant some form of relief to Dreamers at least temporarily and stop playing games with people's futures and lives.

Don't know whether you saw the speech but he clearly said he ain't going to use any executive powers. That is out of question right now.

I appreciate Durbin and the Senators and Representatives that our companions in this battle but I am so unsure we have any type of momentum to pull this off. This feels more like a showcase that Republicans are not willing to support our cause. Which we already knew that; there really is no use in reminding us how much the majority of Republicans and Tea Party members are unwilling to help us.

*sigh* Well, even if it's just a political ploy, we can only hope it's one that works in our favor.

Out of nowhere Obama comes and delivers without much of a push.

This is the year that CIR and DA will pass.

Disagree, I think it will probably be part of the CIR with a very strong border security bill.

This is exactly why GOP will vote for CIR and of course there will be a strong Border Security. I think it will be a sweeping vote to pass in both House and Senate.

they don't care. The freshmen GOP representatives have bucked the establishment and were elected by the retards on the Tea Party side of the party. They could give a flying fuck about the hispanic vote as they see brown people as the enemy, regardless of legal or illegal origins.
