GOP leaders in House, Senate endorse conflicting shutdown strategies

Quote:

There has been some progress on the immigration front, aides say. A bipartisan group of seven senators met multiple times last week to try and hammer out an immigration deal that combines legislation for Dreamers — hundreds of thousands of whom are losing their temporary work permits and deportation protections due to actions by Trump — with other immigration enforcement measures.

The group includes Democratic Sens. Dick Durbin of Illinois and Michael Bennet of Colorado, and GOP Sens. Jeff Flake of Arizona, Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, James Lankford of Oklahoma, Cory Gardner of Colorado and Thom Tillis of North Carolina. They want to be able to strike a deal on immigration they can subsequently present to their leadership.

It's unclear, however, whether Democrats will go along with pushing major issues into next year, upping the pressure on Republicans to come up with a funding proposal that can avert a shutdown.

So are those republicans trying to tie that solution to a spending bill or pass this seperately???

Re: GOP leaders in House, Senate endorse conflicting shutdown strategies

Democratic leaders Nancy Pelosi of California and Chuck Schumer of New York appear to have backed off immigration demands they initially wanted addressed by the new year, but they're still adamant that any boosts in defense money be matched by increases in domestic spending.

They predict another short-term funding bill, leaving a broader spending and immigration agreement until January.

If this is still the case, fuck democrats

Where you read that?

I seriously feel like its quite possibly there is a deal because Schumer and Pelosi have been very tight lipped since coming out of the last meeting! I just refuse to believe that they will sell us down the river like that. They've been adamant on a deal this year for us.

It’s in the article. Any deal with the GOP is bullshit. They’ve scammed their own (Collins) to get her vote. Their doing the same to Dems, trying to bamboozle them out of their leverage.
Democrats need to grow a back bone. I’m glad progressive groups are about to give them hell if they don’t stick to their promise.

They’re trying to prevent outrage from the far right so they can work without pressure. That’s why we need to put pressure on our side so that they don’t forget who they representing in the middle of negotiation.

It's in the article. Also, previous Politico articles reported that they did not discuss immigration during the recent meeting with Trump.

It's clear that additional border funding will have to be included but the exchange for that is the Dream Act.

Durbin, Flake et al are trying to create an immigration deal 'to subsequently' send to Pelosi and Schumer. There are 5 days left for them to stand up and fight to pass a solution. Deliver on their promise.

The deal was Dream Act will be attached to ANY spending regulation including the continuing resolution. This will be the 3rd continuing resolution in which they choose not to fight for immigration relief if they do not do so.

If Republicans did not engage in the negotiations because they only care to pass their Tax crime bill for the moment, Democrats need to push ahead full steam and not give up this one opportunity to finally pass the DA. We can win this and win it now; keep up the pressure.

This is why I do not hold blind allegiance to the Democratic party. I warned all of you about this months ago, but I was labeled a sell-out/Trump supporter who was delusional.

Schumer, Pelosi, Menendez, Cuellar, and other Dems are afraid of shutting government down. They still view as illegals; we are not worth a government shutdown.

If Schumer and Pelosi do stand firm, it will be because of other progressives and the 34 or so Republicans (e.g. Curbelo) pressuring for a resolution this December.

It's not a shutdown for just Dream Act - see, that is a false choice and they know it.

It's a shutdown if these are not included - the lot as ONE CHOICE: the well being of the country:
DreamAct
Chip
Health subsidies
Veterans' funds

ALL AS ONE.

Find me a Republican who cares for children, but not for vets, health care, and Dreamers.
Find me a Democrat who cares for Dreamers, but not for children, vets, or health care.

Neither really exists. False choices and lies.

Even obama was pushed to pass daca thanks to dreamers and liberal organizations. I even recall him keeping DAPA hostage until after the midterms to get Latinos out to vote. Fuck those assholes. Schumer needs to erase his twitter header and avatar if he’s not serious about passing something.

Dude, totally. That's the other thing a lot of people forget. How many times did that asshole deny he had the authority to execute something similar to DACA? I can count at least 6 or so public moments. The asshole implemented DACA because of immigration activists pressuring the fuck out of him. On top of that, let's not forget all the people he fucking deported. I nearly got apprehended like 3-4 times in public places.

The fucking fact that we even have to find ways among ourselves to pressure Schumer and Pelosi to shut the government down if necessary is despicable. This should be coming out of the goodness of their hearts. This is complete fucking bullshit. We are all literally here praying Schumer and Pelosi stand their ground. That alone is bullshit. Bunch of fucking spineless leaches.

Pelosi and Schumer have been quite because THEY DONT HAVE ANYTHING! They aren't shutting down the government and they aren't getting a DACA fix. They would be stupid to keep on saying that it will get done before December ends, because they can't get it done. They know it.

There are talks going on behind the scenes. I actually prefer this because it keeps the right wing nut jobs from going crazy.

Let's see what happens this week. I will hold my judgement until December 22. I will say that there is no reason why they should delay it further.

The tax bill is done, now put up DA for a vote. Give us CHRISTMAS RELIEF!

I agree with you. If the democrats were going to shutdown the government, it would have to be because of all the 4 things you just mentioned, not just Dreamer fix.

As much as a lot of people on this forum, get upset and think the government should shutdown just for dreamers, it's not going to happen. If they want to shutdown it has to be based on all or most of those four issues: CHIP, healthcare subsidies, vets funding, and daca, because as much as the majority of Americans might be sympathetic/empathetic to our situation they do not want a govt shutdown because of dreamers. Politically it would be a bad look for democrats, shutting down the government for immigrants, which negatively affects actual American citizens.

I'm not in total allegiance to the Democratic party. But of the two political parties democrats are the ones that are on our side, some of y'all are confused of who to really be mad at. If it was up to them alone, without having opposition from republicans the Dream Act would have passed already. Politics is not pretty, it really is choosing between the lesser of two evils. So that being that case it's easier to side with most democratic priorities.

Republicans presented their *list* as A condition.

Democrats must do - if they have not done already- present their &condition* as their list ( all of the above).

Again, we are back to choosing the lesser of two evils. Both parties needs to be destroyed. America needs to move away from a two party system. Honestly, I side with more conservative ideology but Republicans end up being a party of racists and religious nut jobs. I don't agree with most Democratic social agendas but then again I don't mind them either. However, I can't stand with a party of weaklings who bend over backwards for the opposition. Democrats got bullied even when they were in the majority.

That's what politics is choosing between the lesser of two evils. Non of the political parties are perfect. I don't agree with all the Democratic social views, but i would much rather root for them than republicans, because for the most part I believe the party believe the laws exist to help people. Republicans on the other hand call them selves "conservatives", truethdully speaking what are they conserving its not the budget, its not peoples lives with thier opposition to healthcare. If you ask me i think the Republican party is a selfish party of ever man, women and child for themselves, they are for you if you are rich, a fetus, and a gun but. I don't see them standing for much else.

I know we are all upset about the current situation for dreamers, but I think you need to evaluate who you are truelly mad at. OBAMA IS not the cause of our demise, so i think calling him an Asshole is being quit ungrateful. Like someone's on this group footer states Obama granted us 4 years (+5) years of freedoms, a chance to live out of the shadows and to live up to our full potential.

Be mad at Trump/ AG sessions they cancelled Daca, and have us stressed right now.
Be mad at the Republican party for blocking Comprehensive immigration reform when it passed the Senate, be MAD at them for opposing a DACA fix with the spending bill and kicking the can down the road.
Who are you really mad at?

Honestly, I am happy they rescinded DACA - because we are no longer a fucking "they got time". Yes, I am aware many people are losing their EAD every day, and I know these fuckers are fucking with us we are not going to get any shits out for another 10 fucking years.

But at least we have a challenge they need to act on - this means we are holding them accountable more than ever. I hope the justice democrats will fuck them up.

Anyway, I am upset, and hopeless as always. I am just gonna say fuck these politicians. Why is it so hard to be a good one!? Some of them did start out with the ideas they wanted to help people! Now they are all corrupted and chicken. Fucking disgrace.

THIS...FUCKING THIS!!!!

I cannot stress enough, in the case of immigration, if politicians start saying "later" or "we hope we can come to an agreement" or "the debate is tough" etc...then nothing is getting done and things are breaking down behind the scenes.

If that report is true that Democrats are backing away from immigration, then its a wrap, game over...simple as that.

I dunno what to say honestly...its 5 days away from the next deadline, and still not hearing much about something passing...smh...

Meanwhile, Democrats are continuing to demand a fix for the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program by the end of the year and believe the funding fight gives them leverage.

Asked about punting the immigration fight to January, Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) reiterated that his party wants an agreement this year.

“They all feel as I do. It's a necessary to do it, and they want it done this year,” he said. “And that's our goal so we'll keep working at it."

Both Pelosi and Schumer have been publicly quite about the possibility of government shutdown over passing any immigration relief. I hope something is in the work behind closed doors.
