If you know how the legislative process works, you will know that bills are referred to committee and subcommittees. S.729 (the DREAM Act in the Senate) is in the Senate Judiciary Committee which in turn has placed it in the Immigration Subcommittee. The bill must be approved by the subcommittee and send it to the committee. The committee must then approve it and send it to the full senate. It is the same process in the House of Representatives. Currently, the DREAM Act in the House (H.R. 1751) is in the House Judiciary Committee and the House Education and Labor Committee.

I propose that we target the members of these committees as the bill passes through them. Because we are calling some Congresspeople that will never see the bill (if it does not make it out of committee) because they are not part of these committees and subcommittees. I HOPE THIS IS MAKING SENSE! (Example: Sen. Lugar is not part of the Immigration Subcommittee. So, even if he supports the bill, he cannot help it advance. Only the members can help the bill advance.)

These are the Congresspeople that I believe we should target:

Senate Judiciary Committee:

Sen. Schumer 202-224-6542
Sen. Leahy 202-224-4242
Sen. Feinstein 202-224-3841
Sen. Durbin 202-224-2152
Sen. Whitehouse 202-224-2921
Sen. Wyden 202-224-5244
Sen. Cornyn 202-224-2934
Sen. Grassley 202-224-3744
Sen. Kyl 202-224-4521
Sen. Sessions 202-224-4124
***The preceding also make up the membership of the Immigration Subcommittee***

Sen. Specter 202-224-4254
Sen. Kohl 202-224-5653
Sen. Hatch 202-224-5251
Sen. Feingold 202-224-5323
Sen. Cardin 202-224-4524

Sen. Coburn 202-224-5754

I disagree. Many of the Senators and Reps you posted are guaranteed supporters of DREAM, thus focusing our energy on them is a waste of time. We should focus on the Congress members who are on the fence, and who could get us the 60 votes that we need.

http://dreamact.info/forum/showthread.php?t=10136 Best plan, in my opinion.

Maybe someone could cross reference which senators and reps are both on-the-fence ( or not a firm yes or no or unknown ) AND are on these committees ?

If it isn't a huge number, then maybe people could come up with targeted arguments in favor of DREAM , that fit these particular members interests and agendas ? i.e. military, teacher training, unions, high tech, etc... and ways that DREAM would help their own local economy / interest.

this might be a good idea, but because we have a limited amount of time, it is better to focus on people who are on the fence, or those who might vote against the dream act (to try to convince them).
this would be an ok plan if we had more time.
sorry

I second the suggestion of cross-referencing this list with the ones on the fence, we can focus on calling them this weekend and then focus on the rest during the week. Or we can call them all.

Thank you all for your comments.

First of all, I did not mean that we only contact these congresspeople. I have been calling these and others.

Second, even if the majority of these congresspeople support the bill, they will not bring it to a discussion if they do not get our calls. The DREAM Act is not the only bill in these committees and if they get more calls supporting other bills, those other bills will get more priority. We want our bill to move through committee as fast as possible, before other bills.

Thanks.

I agree with you and what others are saying Cross reference those in the Committee and sub committee who are on the fence

so basically call these senators

Sen. Specter 202-224-4254
Sen. Graham 202-224-5972
Sen. Grassley 202-224-3744

in the house i dunno all the on fence members

Hey, I got a quick question. I've been calling everyday since it was introduced, each senator that was on the fence. Then i got to wondering.. is this a toll free number or will i be charged for calling out of state? NOt that It'll matter too much to me cus it's well worth the money to get the DREAM act passed, just want to know if ill end up with a huge bill so i wont be caught off guard.

Depends on your phone plan if its a Cell phone more than likely you have domestic long distance included and you'll just get charged at the normal rate or the minutes which are allocated to you. If you called from a land line make sure your phone plan includes domestic long distance if not you might get charged a good amount but i don't know which plan you got.

but best advice is call the toll free # 1-800-828-0498
