(CNSNews.com) – Senator Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.), chairman of the Senate Subcommittee on Immigration, Border Security and Citizenship, said Congress is moving forward with immigration reform and that he personally had met with Lou Dobbs to discuss the issue, an apparently surprising development given that Dobbs, a former CNN anchor, is known for his outspoken criticism of past congressional attempts at immigration reform.

Schumer made his remarks at a Capitol Hill press conference on Thursday when a reporter asked about President Barack Obama’s comments concerning immigration in his State of the Union speech.

“Yes, we are making good progress," Schumer said. "The progress that – the work that we’re doing in the fall is continuing now. We're meeting with all different kinds of groups, trying to get everybody together to come out for one bill. In fact, yesterday, I met with Lou Dobbs who, as many of you know, is changing his views on immigration."

Schumer also emphasized the need for a bipartisan immigration reform bill.

“Now I've said all along, even before last Tuesday with the Massachusetts election, that we have to have this bill be a bipartisan bill — two Democrats, two Republicans -- to introduce it,” said Schumer. “We're not there yet. We're still working on getting our Republicans, but we're talking to people who have a lot of interest and enthusiasm, and our intention is to move forward.”

In his Jan. 27 State of the Union speech, Obama said, “And we should continue the work of fixing our broken immigration system – to secure our borders and enforce our laws, and ensure that everyone who plays by the rules can contribute to our economy and enrich our nation.”

While at CNN, from which he recently resigned, Dobbs consistently spoke out against illegal immigration into the United States and criticized Congress’ past attempts at immigration reform as little more than “amnesty.”

On the Jan. 26 edition of ABC’s “Nightline,” Dobbs said, “I have said from 2003 on that I support a rational, effective and humane immigration policy.” Also, as “Nightline” reported, Dobbs had recently told the Spanish-language network Telemundo, “We need the ability to legalize illegal immigrants on certain conditions.”

Inquires to Sen. Schumer’s office by CNSNews.com for further comment, were not returned before this story was posted.

This is a very good strategy that the Senator from New York is using to open debate on Immigration. If we have committed republicans along with the democratic party, Congress should pass this bill without heated encounters prevalent in the Health Care debate. On the other hand, Janet Napolitano and Co. are preparing their own arsenal to win immigration reform. It's looking good folks!

This is the same exact content of the article in the thread above. CNS contacted Schumer's office for comment after publication of this article and they weren't available for comment. We had more than *2* Republicans support CIR last time around. You already have two in McCain and Graham; what is it exactly that they do not support? The provisions and demands remain the same for both sides of the aisle, and one is going to have to give. I feel reluctant to take this at its word; however, it does give a blimp of optimism, which no doubt will be crushed sometime next week when some jerk publishes something negative on CIR. Then the whole cycle of hope and despair will start all over again.

I'm tired of this bipartisanship story because the Republicans really have no interest in it. Really. It's more like bipartisanSHIT.

So, why aren't we ALL contacting Dobbs and inviting him for some coffee and champurrado? Heck, I'll send him flowers and a thank you card if he jumps on board CIR this year. He's not stupid and he' doesn't want to be known as "anti-immigrant". He's actually pretty smart and I think one of the reasons he's been so controversial is because he know what he says pushes buttons and gets ratings.

McCain wants a Guest Worker program but I believe Schumer isplanning on excluding the guest worker provision to satisfy the blue dogs. It's ironic that the legalization issue no longer appears to be the most bitter pill. McCain did mention that he won't support a bill without the guest worker program. Now you know why McCain is not on board with the 2010 CIR efforts.

Ugh, wtf, then.
If they already have the Republican support, and they want to pass this shit, why don't they just throw in a damn guest worker program, the legalization stuff, and BAM, both sides win, and we have reform.
I'm highly annoyed at all these politicians. I'm not grasping what's the big problem and why they don't do this already.

Hate to burst your bubbles but Dobbs is just playing politics. It's no secret he wants to be President. Good liars don't have mean what they say- That's not to say I won't take his help, but I wouldn't go as far as to send the guy flowers. Bet he finally realized the tax money going to deportations would've cost BILLIONS more. Nice PR move Dobbs.

And is it good news that we can't even get two Republicans to support our cause?

I have been hoping and praying for CIR for years - I do know what McCain wants; my question was directed for viewers to read between the lines: McCain sponsored the last major legislation in 2007, and the entire purpose was to be able to legalize the undocumented population; with all the other bits sprinkled in to buy support. If the country supposedly does not want more foreigners; then a guest worker, excempt of full legal duties; taxes and certainly devoid of rights, has no business here. He is flip-flopping and just finding anything he can to back his opposition now.

This whole going after Dobbs 'support' is a new low for the Democratic party. What's next? Ask Jeff Sessions to write the opening statement of the next La Raza, NAACP or SPLC convention? Hahahahaha. Please. It's a gimmick. We and Senator Schumer hope it works; but still a gimmick. No. Dobbs got the fear of God after that imaginary shot fired at his property last year. Maybe it was God who made him imagine himself under fire and brought him to his senses. Good Lord.
