GOP Sen. Lankford on immigration deal: It's time to try

A key Republican in Senate immigration talks who supports the President's framework isn't quite sure yet if the proposal could pass the Senate -- but he says it's at least time to try.

Oklahoma's Sen. James Lankford said lawmakers who have spent months trying to negotiate a path forward on the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals policy, which President Donald Trump decided to terminate in September, need to begin debating and voting on a starting point -- even if it's unclear they can get the 60 votes required in the Senate to advance legislation.

"I think it's best if we go find out," Lankford told CNN in an exclusive interview while on a three-day trip to Central America this weekend. "Quite frankly, there's still a lot of latitude even in that conversation."

As the March 5 deadline to find a solution on DACA before large numbers of protections begin expiring approaches, the level of engagement among senators has swelled, Lankford said. He believes the White House framework will help direct the conversation in a more focused way, arguing that a bill proposed in the House by conservative Republican Rep. Bob Goodlatte of Virginia -- which had support from the President -- "was not going to be the starting proposal in the Senate."

"So the question is: What is?" he said. "We've got to have a first straw man to work from, and we spent most of last week trying to establish what's the straw man."

Great news about the Shitlatte bill. Now what we need is the Dems and the Republicans in the Senate to get their acts together and release something.

we are headed down a scenario where something adhering to stuff in the proposal passes in the house and fails in the senate because of opposition from dems. i don't want to believe they'd be so stupid to obstruct a bill once we come come to that stage, but im positive they'll try their best to spin it as something they had no choice but to do.

This bill is GREAT for the Republicans.

If it passes, in one fell swoop they get to appear compassionate for saving the precious DACA "kids" that both parties care about and at the same time end the current family based immigration system as we know it and significantly limit immigration, make life even harder for the 14 million other undocumented, and make sure they have no chance at legalization, ever.

If it fails, they'll get to blame the Democrats and getting weak stomached dreamers to turn against the Democrats and get them to protest Chuck's office some more.

Hell, half the people on this forum are already brainwashed by that. At least it seems to be the consensus by people like honorarie_eleanor who just happened to show up on here when this was announced and are giving Republican talking points. Nothing mysterious or strange about that, eh Comrade?

If the Dems would have focused on immigration instead of the ACA, they would have had 11 million new Dem voters and they would have never lost an election again. They should pass this, then when they regain control they can go back and legalize the rest of the undocumented. It’s literally the perfect plan, and they don’t see it.

where in my posts did i say anything in flat out support to republicans.
if you can't point them out, go read a book to brush up on your reading comprehension.
maybe then you can have an adequate enough reading level to know none of my posts are partisan.

Kill that with the hopes and dreams of the dreamers here who are more than ready to kick their parents in front of a bus and everyone else who isn't them along with it.

what if our parents such as myself and fl_dreamer already got deported or detained by ICE?

enforcement is coming with this administration regardless if legislation passes or not.

its only a matter of time when it happens to you.
