[quote=Dukem88;153824]Who else finds it funny that 200k people showed up at the foot steps of the government and the only way you would know about it is if you read between the lines of "Babies are not getting enough vitamin D" and "Toyota warned dealers in '02". And mind you, only on the day it actually happened, because I can't find shit about it anymore since the day turned to Monday.[/QUOT

Exactly my point. Not even Univision???? Something is going on and I don't like it. I hope Gutierrez didn't take the bait of Obama promising 'reform' next year along with any newly elected Replubicans. Hahahaha...as if.

"Do not blame Obama"....

Fail. Same argument (ie, excuse) given in 2008 (presidential election), 2009, now 2010, and if we wait for it, 2011 is presidential re-election campaign! The President sets the legislative agenda, and if you are this president, you take advantage of the fact that your party controls both chambers.

Some facts:

In 2007, when it came down to business, twelve Republican Senators voted for the DREAM Act, while nine Democrats voted against. McCain would have likely voted Yea, in light of his major role in immigration reform bill and past co-sponsorship of the DREAM Act, but in fear for his presidential campaign did not vote at all.

Source: http://www.senate.gov/legislative/LI...00394#position

Right now, we have five solid Republican supporters in the Senate and twelve Republican supporters in the House.

Source: you.

My appeal to you:

The Republican party is generally not our friend, but neither is it our enemy. We allow the issue to be polarized across party lines when in fact it isn't, look at the numbers. There is an election this year, polarization of every conceivable issue is what both parties want, so people know who to vote for in November.

We are witnessing and discussing theater that is merely pushing our vote further and further down the line. Focus and on the votes and substance -- discuss it with similar passion -- and substance, not theater, is what you will get.

right on Nick!

We can spend all day and all year debating whether the DA (or CIR) will pass, but it is up to us to let the elected officials know that it is a priority and an important issue.

The problem is that we're running out of time. The following article is a pretty good summary:

Obama Got His Groove Back, But Can He Keep It Up On Immigration And Climate Change?

Posted By Gilbert Mercier On March 22, 2010 @ 6:24 pm In Opinion | 1 Comment

[1]

The Republicans were clamoring that the failure of the health care bill would be “Obama’s Waterloo”. It is turning out that the GOP and their henchmen of the Tea Party “movement” were wrong. The bill was not Obama’s Waterloo but his Austerlitz (to refer to one of Napoleon’s military master piece).

[2]

Last night, President Obama pulled what should be called a “Lyndon Johnson” on a stunned and powerless opposition. The bill passed last night is arguably the most important piece of legislation coming out of Congress since Medicare in 1965 and Social Security in the 1930s.

To pass the bill, the President had to campaign for it as hard as he did to get elected. Unfortunately for the Obama administration ambitious agenda, the personal involvement of the President to push the health care bill through Congress should have occurred last year. In effect, the President and the Democrats have now very little time to tackle two key reforms: Immigration reform and climate change.

[3]

The stumbling blocks for the immigration reform will come from the same quarters than the one from health care reform. In the last stretch of the so called health care “debate”, the discourse of the so called Tea Party movement showed its true color: namely racial slurs in the form of the N word peppered with homophobic epithets directed at Congressman Barney Frank. In other words, the Tea Party and their allies from various white supremacist groups will be mentioning terms such as “wet back” and of course the N…. word again. The Democrats should take on the immigration reform first. The Latino community is getting impatient with was have being so far a lack of initiative from the Democrats and the Obama administration to tackle the pressing issue.

[4]

The Climate Change bill will just be as challenging to pass. The oil industry and coal industries will make sure their respective lobbyists are “hard at work” on both Republicans and Democrats Congressmen from the get go. And of course, in the streets, the Tea Party activists will all of sudden become the party of “Drill Baby Drill” instead of the one of “Kill The Health Care Bill”.

If the Obama administration has learned anything from the Congressional adventures of the health care bill it should be that to get anything done in Washington (or elsewhere) tactical force must be used. The Obama administration wasted a year trying to be “convivial” with the GOP, and by doing so got very little done. Applying the same type of Congressional strategies which successfully passed the health care bill should be used in a very timely manner by President Obama and the Democrats. Otherwise, depending on the result of November’s elections both legislation concerning climate change and immigration reform could be scrapped for a long time.

Yes, they offer amendments, that's part of the McConnell strategy that I was talking about: slow down President Obama's agenda by way of parliamentary stratagems.

Senator Durbin said it best, "their goal is to slow down activity to stop legislation from passing in the belief that this will embolden conservatives in the next election and will deny the president a record of accomplishment."

I totally disagree.

Democrats want to work with Republicans —and they've demonstrated it— so the polarization is only coming from one side.

As a bona fide progressive I can tell you that what Democrats are offering is no polarizing material. Not even close. Heck, even on taxing the rich, Reagan is more progressive than current watered-down Democratic proposals —freaking Reagan! And that's because Democrats have gone above and beyond to cajole Republicans to work in a bipartisan fashion.

Now, like I said at the beginning, I know that in the end some Republicans will vote for CIR/DA, they're just not willing to cosponsor. But McCain is not one of them, and it pisses me off when unknowledgeable people keep bringing him up as our potential hero. I believe he just gave us the arthritis-ridden finger.

Haha yes I did. This makes your first post very amusing for me.

They don't want to, but at times have been forced to, in some way or another. Whether it has been adding to a bill, or voting for a bill. There are many reasons as to why they do this and in my first post I merely stated that there has been some sort of cooperating.
