Although he's described as a moderate conservative who is willing to work with his opponents (Dems) on certain issues, it seems highly unlikely that he would have a change of heart on the Dream Act/CIR based on his track record, his campaign and official government websites, and the support he receives from anti-immigration groups.1
2Editorial from The Dallas Morning News:
Washington's a divided town. It needs effective leaders who quietly work with their colleagues, no matter their party affiliation.
We particularly like his idea of encouraging the conservative Republican Study Committee to hold regular meetings with the conservative Democratic Blue Dog coalition.
On immigration, though, Mr. Marchant needs to think more "comprehensively." His constituents undoubtedly hold sharp views about illegal immigrants.
3 I haven't found any solid position on the Dream Act but he is a co-sponsor of the Fairness for American Students Act - H. R. 4548 introduced 1/27/2010.
Undocumented students (from the handful of states that allow in-state tuition with residency requirements) would be ineligible for in-state tuition unless out-of-state USC and PR students are also given the same rate.
Prohibits federal agencies from providing financial assistance to post-secondary schools that provide benefits to illegal aliens in contravention of this Act.
Some of his positions/solutions to reduce legal and illegal immigration are some of the strictest:
"Immigration reform should not legalize, grant amnesty for, or confer any other legal status condoning the unlawful U.S. entry or presence of any individual." (H.Res. 1026 introduced 1/21/2010) 4
- *He is for denying citizenship to U.S. children born of foreign parents and he wants to decrease both types of immigration so he would view the Dream Act negatively (esp. the possibility that once legalized, new Permanent Residents would file for family members)
- *He seeks to end most of the Family Visa Preferences categories and Diversity Visa Lottery
- *Supports increased border security and supports local enforcement of Immigration laws (287g )
- *For penalizing "Sanctuary Cities"
