President Trump is introducing legislation today with Sens. Tom Cotton, R-Ark., and David Perdue, R-Ga., aimed at cutting legal immigration to the United States, a White House official confirmed.

The effort, following his campaign pledge to reform the country’s immigration system, expands on a bill introduced by the senators in February to cut the number of legal immigrants into the U.S. by 50 percent over 10 years. That bill, which has stalled for months in the Senate, would eliminate diversity lottery visas and limit the number of refugees offered permanent residency in the country each year.

Supporters of the proposal say it would help low-skilled American workers compete for work. Some Republicans and business groups have criticized the measure.

According to the Department of Homeland Security, 1,051,031 immigrants gained permanent residency in the United States in 2015.

Trump, along with Cotton and Perdue, will make the announcement this morning at the White House.

Does this mean that any petition that was already filed will suddenly becomes invalid or is it going forward?

Quote:
(2) INVALIDITY OF CERTAIN PETITIONS AND APPLICATIONS.—Any petition under section 204 of the Immigration and Nationality Act (8 U.S.C. 1154) seeking classification of an alien under a family-sponsored immigrant category that was eliminated by the amendments made by this section and filed after the date on which this Act was introduced and any application for an immigrant visa based on such a petition shall be considered invalid.

But, seriously, let the DREAM Act be the compromise that is attached to this act, and passed.

This was introduced back in February. Didn't go anywhere then, won't go anywhere now.

I had planned to put in my petition under my mom this year. I don't think this is going anywhere unless there are changes made and at least the dream act is attached

No, but your time of getting a green card will likely increase because of reduced quota each year.

Instead of waiting 5 years, you might have to wait 10 years until a slot become available for your petition.
