John McCain is using the ugly frog strategy in order to poison the well and avoid the issues.

Quote:
Long before Karl Rove put his name on the politics of distraction, a top Republican operative who specializes in electing weak candidates once explained to me how you derail a powerful foe who's winning on issues. He called it the ugly frog routine.

Ugly frogs in this game can be anything the opposing candidate said or did that, out of context, puts them on the defense.

"Stick that frog right in their face, shake it all around, and say, 'Here, look at this BIG UGLY FROG,'" the GOP consultant said. "Then, as they defend themselves and explain the context, real quick grab another ugly frog. Repeat often until they've spent most of the campaign reacting to your agenda."

John McCain's team has been playing the ugly frog routine against Barack Obama almost daily, starting with the Paris Hilton celebrity advertisement, forcing the Democrats to react to a barrage of silly attacks.

How do you fight the ugly frog routine, I asked this practitioner of the political dark arts. "Get your own frogs," he said. "Stay off defense.
He wants to send outrageous ad after outrageous ad (he sent the sex education for kindergartners attack ad earlier) to get the Obama campaigning off balance and explaining the latest accusation is totally false etc. etc. while the McCain people move on to the next outrageous accusation. McCain doesn't want to talk about the issues since all he's proposing are warmed over Bush policies and wants to change the subject about what Obama does or doesn't support. I'm sure the Obama campaign is already formulating a strategy for this.

LOL..

I remember when Bush was running, their campaign manager came on the daily show and had the balls to say "We run a very positive campaign."

The RNC this year had no substance except attacking the democratic party, and this shit is just getting plain ludicrous. What makes me more frustrated is though, there are plenty of people in this country (elderly, religious) who buys into this bullshit.

Mccain is saying that Obama voted with the democratic leadership who voted for amendments designed to weaken support for the bill so that they had political cover voting the "right" way on the main bill when trying to end debate because they knew the bill would not have the support to end debate because it was "weakened" from the poison pills. Here are the five "poison pills":

Obama Voted For Five “Poison Pill” Amendments Designed To Kill Immigration Reform Compromise:

S.A. 1169 (Bingaman) — Obama Voted In Favor Of Lowering The Annual Visa Quota For Guest Workers From 400,000 To 200,000. “Bingaman, D-N.M., amendment no. 1169 to the Kennedy, D-Mass., substitute amendment no. 1150. The Bingaman amendment would lower the annual visa quota for guest workers from 400,000 to 200,000 per year.” (S. 1348, CQ Vote #175: Adopted 74-24: R 27-21; D 46-2; I 1-1, 5/23/07, Obama Voted Yea, Kennedy Voted Nay, McCain Did Not Vote)

S.A. 1181 (Dorgan) — Obama Voted In Favor Of Sunsetting The Guest Worker Visa Program After Five Years. “Dorgan, D-N.D., amendment no. 1181 to the Kennedy, D-Mass., substitute amendment no. 1150. The Dorgan amendment would sunset the temporary guest worker visa program in the bill after five years.” (S. 1348, CQ Vote #178: Rejected 48-49: R 9-38; D 38-10; I 1-1, 5/24/07, Obama Voted Yea, Kennedy Voted Nay, McCain Voted Nay)

S.A. 1202 (Obama) — Obama Sponsored And Voted In Favor Of An Amendment That Would Sunset The Merit-Based Evaluation System For Immigrants. “Obama, D-Ill., amendment no. 1202 to the Kennedy, D-Mass., substitute amendment no. 1150. The Obama amendment would sunset the merit-based evaluation system for immigrants after five years.” (S. 1348, CQ Vote #200: Rejected 42-55: R 1-47; D 39-8; I 2-0, 6/6/07, Obama Voted Yea, Kennedy Voted Nay, McCain Voted Nay)

S.A. 1267 (Bingaman) — Obama Proposed And Voted In Favor Of His Amendment That Would Remove The Requirement That “Y” Visa Holders Leave The U.S. For One Year Before Being Able To Renew The Visa. “Bingaman, D-N.M., amendment no. 1267 to the Kennedy, D-Mass., substitute amendment no. 1150. The Bingaman amendment would remove the requirement that ‘Y’ non-immigrant visa holders leave the United States before they are able to renew their visa.” (S. 1348, CQ Vote #189: Rejected 41-57: R 4-44; D 35-13; I 2-0, 6/6/07, Obama Voted Yea, Kennedy Voted Nay, McCain Voted Nay)

S.A. 1316 (Dorgan) — Obama Voted To Sunset The Y-1 Non-Immigrant Temporary Worker Visa Program After Five Years. “Dorgan, D-N.D., amendment to the Kennedy, D-Mass., substitute amendment. The Dorgan amendment would sunset the Y-1 non-immigrant temporary worker visa program after five years.” (S. 1348, CQ Vote #201: Adopted 49-48: R 11-37; D 37-10; I 1-1, 6/6/07, Obama Voted Yea, Kennedy Voted Nay, McCain Voted Nay)

^ We're not going to get distracted and we're not stupid. Whatever "poison pills" (and it was called poison pills because the compromise was fragile on both sides) were added (the Republicans proposed a ton and only the Dorgan amendment was the only that was adopted on your list) could have been erased in conference committee.

McCain is completely throwing away his integrity to try to win this election. They highlighted his character in his convention, but from what I've seen lately, he's no different than Bush on policy and character. I'll quote the Obama campaign and say:

Quote:
"Last week, John McCain told Time magazine he couldn’t define what honor was. Now we know why."

Yeah i think the real "poison pills" were when the republicans tried to have all undocumented people deported and blocked a path to citizenship.
Do not forget! Do not Forgive! Now is the time to punish the republican party by voting Democrat!
I hate the McCain campaign and I hate the way Obama is just taking it on the chin like that. He needs to bring McCain-Palin down by the balls!

I know I'm going to be the only one to say this, but let me say it back in 2006, when it actually happened:

http://dreamact.info/forum/showpost....80&postcount=6

So, in my opinion, there is some truth to what the McCain camp is saying. READ THE LINKED POST BEFORE YOU REPLY.

Really, lets stop being so passionate one way or another and figure out how to pass the DREAM Act regardless of who wins the election.

Politicians lie, its part of their job description, so its not a factor for me. However, it still amazes me how lightly people flame McCain and how godly we, as a group, consider Obama. In my opinion it is the wrong approach to take. What if McCain wins the presidency? What will we say then? Lets seek his support and help after all the shit we've sent his way?

Bush was and is a horrible president, but have we ever stopped to consider the fact that he was, after all, a major driving factor behind immigration reform and our Congress has failed him. Whether McCain or Obama will be good presidents only, and I repeat ONLY, time will tell. No amount of heated debate will change that.

Immigration reform is possible either way and that should be the theme of our discussion. Heated debate over who is who will lead us nowhere. How and how are the better question. Please, give both candidates the respect they deserve.

^ You forget Bush helped torpedo the Dream Act. Don't you remember the White House sending their subtle veto threat letter that Sessions read 10 minutes before the Dream vote?

As for CIR, Ted Kennedy had a plan and it had to do with the conference committee/better House version. We just had to pass through the Republican-led filibuster and remember, the actual votes in the Senate collapsed as soon as the Senators saw that the bill was going to die anyway. We needed the moderate Republicans and the pressure was too strong at the time for them to vote for it regardless of what the actual bill looked like, flawed as it was.

Again, McCain is trying to poison the well and go for the "well all politicians are scumbuckets mindset" that tars everyone's ethics. At least give credit to Obama and Reid for supporting the Dream Act (instead of cowardly skipping the vote for a cosponsored bill) and for never wavering on the issue.

For Dream Act strategy, we need more Democratic Senators and the ear of the President. Sen. Durbin, the chief advocate of the Dream Act, is one of his earliest supporters and Obama listens to his advice. A public backing from the President would greatly help, something we have more of a chance with from Obama.

And I don't think McCain cares all that much what we have to say since he probably expects us to support Obama anyways and our DAP voice isn't all that important in the grand scheme of things.

But I do fear McCain is going to be like Sen. Specter who says he supports the Dream Act but won't enact it because he believes in comprehensive immigration reform. I don't want Dream to be stuck to that legislation if it can be avoided.
