On an important side note. If you let your DL expire, you must restart the process all over again as if you're applying for a new one. So it is imperative that you never let that happen. I renewed mine just recently even though it wasn't due until June 09.
yea, I think that's what I plan on doing, even though my DL doesn't expire til beyond 2009, I'd rather renew it ASAP cuz the law might change.

So citizenhope, you never had a problem with using your SSN for various things (besides getting a really job) because of your undocumented status right?

well i think i've seen you post on another thread that you have a non workers SSN right? then you can renew your license all they ask for is a ssn you can renew up to a year before it expires wish i would have known that before. so you lose nothing by trying . me on the other hand i am trying out a not so loophole by getting a ineligibility letter from the SS office and hope that i can get my license renewed.
ah shit. i didnt know you could renew you license a year before it expired. if i had known this, i would have renewed it in january

u are going to have to let me know how u do with your loophole. i've been talking to ppl that i know in sw detroit. i guess they're saying that u can't renew in the city of detroit, but that there is a possibility elsewhere in the county. who knows tho. i don't know too many specifics.... what i do know is that earlier in the summer (definitely after march, idk about june) my aunt received a renewal notice for her ID even though she doesn't live in michigan anymore. i know it's not the same thing as having a driver's license, but it's better than having nothing. she's in the same situation as us .... so i know she didn't put down a ssn for her ID cause she doesnt have one. i'll have to ask my mom when exactly this happened.

right now i'm waiting to see if they even send me a renewal notice.

just out of pure curiosity, how did you find out about the timeline of the ssn verification program?

well around march was when the new law came in place requiring new applicants
to prove legal status and renewals needing a social security number. so my uncle got a renewal notice around april and they didn't ask him for anything at all just his current license. then around june my moms friend husband renewed and towards the end of june my mom's best friend renewed through a way which can't be discussed here. and finally around july my friends co-worker couldn't renew he first tried giving a made up ssn but that didn't work so i guess around July was when the ssn verification program kick started .

everyone will receive a renewal notice within 30-45 days nearing expiration so in your case DreamerHippie you will receive a renewal notice around early-late December if i am not wrong. if you applied for your license in the past using a non-workers SSN you will qualify (maybe) to renew via mail and not even need to show up at the sos branch office, but if you didn't apply in the past with a ssn you will not qualify for renewal via mail. But you can renew now without receiving a renewal notice that's if you have a Valid non-workers SSN or can get the correct letter of ineligibility and catch a sos worker on their good day lol.

Then again i am not 100% positive but you should try to renew now just in case some other law comes in place.

Remember, it depends on your age too. If you are turning 21, regardless of having a SSN, you are going to have to go in to the branch office.

The letter of ineligibility which you speak of is just that, a letter from the Social Security Administration stating that you are ineligible for a SSN. You have to apply for a SSN, get rejected and then take the letter to SOS, but the catch is that the letter will disqualify you from being able to get a license as it will show you do not have legal status, which is now a condition of getting a license in Michigan.

Side story, my mom let her license expire (i know clueless, carefree parents and people wonder why I am in the boat I am in . . .) and realized a day after that she had done so. Anyhow, she was able to get a new license without a problem, she took a new picture and was out the door in an hour. One reason for it is that she as a non-work ssn and the second reason, I am guessing, is that the staff is not yet trained on everything.
