For the Capitol One credit card I was only asked how much money I make annually.. so I entered how much I made and I was approved. If you were denied, it may have something to do with how much money you make annually. A fellow dreamer I know applied for a Capitol One credit card and put down that they made $5000 annually and got approved... but I don't know what's the lowest you have to be making annually to get approved. I mean I thought 5K was too low.

bn1: They do ask for your occupation, if I remember correctly, but under occupations you could select student which is what I applied under. The same thing for my bank credit card, I believe. I applied as a student and put down my annual income.

For the people that were able to do it,

Can you describe the steps that you took? I called the capitol one customer service and spoke with a couple of people with very deep southern accents and were not able to help me. The guys just told me to put that instead of a social.

I also contacted wamu and they said a social was needed,

Thanks everyone.

There really are no steps, you can apply online and simply put in your ITIN in the SSN field. Everything else, just fill out using common sense. I had no problem, I have credit cards with several different banks. I don't like Capital One too much though, as their interest rates are atrocious.

If any of them sent you letters offering you a credit card, just follow the steps on the letter.

Thanks. Now I just have to get an ITIN. I guess I will do that as soon as possible. Does it matter that I don't work because I believe you need to be submitting a tax return in order to get the ITIN. Also, what did you guys put as the reason on the W-7 form?

Would it be easier to go to a tax consultant to do this? It seems like very beaurocratic and I want to get it right.

Thanks everyone.

As bn1 has said several times, go to a bank and ask to open a savings account, they'll say you need to have a SSN or ITIN for tax purposes as it is an interest bearing account. Tell them to say that to you in writing.

Now you have a legit reason to get an ITIN w/o the need to file a return.

Good luck, if you have more questions just call the toll free number the IRS has for ITIN questions.

I mean for the reason in the form itself. They ask you if you are an illegal alien, etc...

Not in writing, you need the bank statement that you have a saving account there. If they write a letter for the IRS saying that you got a saving account it won't work.

You also need to send them a copy of your passport, a notarize copy of your passport, or they will reject you.

So they ask how much you make and what your occupation when you apply for a credit, but they don't want you to prove it?

wouldn't putting your ITIN instead of a SS# be considered illegal to do ?
