Oh yeah I think you're right, I don't think selective service applies as long as you stay in-status (those of us who are out of status still NEED to apply.)

I'm curious as to how that would work once you apply for dream though, since legal visa holders will no longer have the exemption.

Basically, you will need to be in compliance with SS in order for you do participate in any federal program like naturalization. If you are under a non-immigrant visa, then you are not required to register. So you are still in compliance with SS. I can think of a scenario where someone comes here at the age 25 on F1 visa and then at age 27 say he marries a US Citizen. He is still eligible for naturalization because he did not violate the SS requirement (he was exempt from SS till he got his greencard). Thats my understanding....I will confirm this with a lawyer. Can someone else confirm this ?

I wonder if we can still go ahead and register for SS....Anyone here on F1 or B1 or any other non-immigrant visa ? who registered for Selective Service (SS) ?

Moreover, its not easy to get H1B. Perhaps daffodils, ejgejgejg, Carter86, bobinalbuquerque and others can back me up on this by sharing your opinions/experiences.

I graduated in June 2007 with a 4 year degree in Biochemistry, and there is no way I'm getting a H1B visa. The problem is there is so much competition. Entry level college graduates with no experience do not stand a chance. It's not like I can just decide to go to graduate school on an F1/J1 VISA either - due to the non resident tuition costs (I could apply under the Ab540 in Cali but then I couldn't get Graduate school TAships/funding and I would also get a nice 10 year ban for overstaying my i-94 by over 180 days). I'm basically stuck but still researching my options daily.

That sucks dude...My suggestion is: take a loan and attend a public state college to do graduate work..In today's competitive world, you can't get much out of your B.S. degree GIVEN that you require a visa sponsorship. It will be expensive given that we have to pay international fees but think of it as an investment for the far future. I hope the Dream passes soon and I hope it helps us out...

Check out this lawyer who supports it....

Hi guys,
Thought you might be interested in this article that came out today in Miller-McCune magazine. It is about legal immigrants caught in the "age out" quandry, who are hoping to take advantage of the DREAM Act. I interviewed some people from this message board for the article.

I found this thread and indeed legals could benefit from the Dream Act after all.

But in my case, I am wondering about the legal definition of "initial entry"; is it the first time you entered the US in your life or is it defined per visa issued?

Another word, is it considered another "initial entry" or "re-entry" if I return to the US on another visa after a 5-year absence? I looked up on google and the case wasn't clear.

To Daffodils and Null_Value....

How did you guys end up readjusting your status for F1? Did you go about it from the beginning (as you started college) or midway?

I ask because basically I'll be readjusting to F1 next semester, but it means going back to Mexico and doing it through the consulate (only way I know). How did you justify having lived illegaly?

Also, Null_value, I read you can't work, why so if you are an f1 holder elegible to do so?

I'd appreciate it guys, thanks!!

Good immigration lawyers can do it for you, but it will cost you.
