Well, the way I understand it, its optional right now for companies that do not have contracts with the U.S. Government. Plus there is a list available online of the companies that participate in E-Verify. You could check that out see if the business appears on there.

I've been blessed to work at a medium sized company (about 50 permanent employees + countless temps that are always there). They never asked for any of my documents (being related to an employee didn't hurt either). I've been there close to 4 years now. Don't lose hope. Just make the calls. The worst that can happen is that you'll end up right where you are right now. Good luck to you.

True true. Some companies are pretty clear about that right from the beginning. The Pizza Hut right across my street has a huge sign that says "We Support E-verify" so you'll know right away that you'd need legal papers to work there.
