I would like to remind everyone that the last 2 times that we took a shot at immigration reform, we had less than 50 Democratic Senators and a Republican President.

Me thinks our odds are still a ways better than before.

That dosnt mean that losing 1 vote will make no difference. If you saw the healthcare, it came down to the last vote. If people refuse to help citizens of their own nation, what makes you think they will help outsiders ?!

If healthcare could turn a solid blue state to red imagine the shivers it would be sending down democrat states in tossups.

It is highly unlikely immigration reform would be taken up in this climate, however for them to ignore immigration would be to lose the hispanic vote.

Basically it boils down to, do they value the hispanic vote or independants. At this stage they cant aim for both, they are bound to piss of someone unless they pass smaller measures (Dream act), and annoy but not majorly piss of independants and give the hispanics something to be happy about.

I linked to the Scott Brown campaign website on his immigration stance.

CIR will definitely have to go through the 60 vote gauntlet. Schumer and Graham are working on a CIR bill, but I don't know if they're still going to go through with a CIR bill. We'll have to wait on what happens.

Dream could go stand alone, but it doesn't have to go through the filibuster. I don't think this is super secret info but Dream could be attached in committee level. That way it'll take 60 votes to remove Dream if it were attached to a bill in committee. Barring a committee attachment, Dream will need 60 votes if it's a stand alone bill or an amendment on the Senate floor.

I do think the 60 vote supermajority requirement the Republicans have imposed on everything is ridiculous but those are the Senate rules as it currently stands. Normally, filibusters are only invoked 50 to 60 times for the whole session in the Senate but this session it's been close to 140 motions filed for Republican filibusters. The session has only been half over! Ridiculous.

I strongly believe that all of our focus should be on passing DREAM. Nothing is impossible. There are currently four warriors walking along the east coast to support our cause. Giving up now is not an option.

Good assessment. There will always be Republicans who will support CIR. Health care was a different issue that's purely partisan.

I'm tired of folks looking at the glass like it's half empty when it's really half full. No, these are not the ideal circumstances to get any immigration bill passed, but we've seen worse (not economically speaking, but in terms of Dems vs. Republicans).

What we need is less whining and more action.

Lets remember that not too long ago democrats had a 51 seat majority in the senate, yet they were on the verge of passing CIR but we all knw that story ended).

I think they are better positioned now to pass a CIR bill. They need a major victory before the mid-terms, and Health Care wont be it. Cap-and-Trade is DOA, Stimulus 2 is going nowhere.

What else is lft for them to do that signals real change that americans support in poll after poll, that would give a boost to the economy, that strengthens national security, and that will energize the democratic base going into November?

Unless im crazy, CIR is all they got now.... But maybe i'm jus crazy.

This was just ONE local election, the seats and power will shift back and forth. Democrats are being voted out because the American economy is in a dive not seen since The Great Depression. The other thing is we need to stop blindly supporting democrats, they haven't really done anything for us anyway.
