Well, I wouldn't be too certain about the private school route. When I applied (and was accepted) to a PhD program at a private first-tier college, I was also presented with a W-2 form to fill out. Since I couldn't fill it out due to lack of SSN, I couldn't go to the school. I think that no matter what, all schools still rely on that tax form for you to fill out since I assume you'd want the TA experience.

Hey I am a grad student at the UMN as well and I've tried getting TA/RA position. I was offered a TA position during my first semester and I tried to work it through with my coordinator but it wasn't doable. The part that doesn't work is the tax form. Since the school is paying you they need to file a tax for you and they need informatioin from you not to mention status is where we get stuck. I didn't see any options I could choose to get away with so I just told my coordinator that I changed my mind and denied the position. If I remember correctly, under status options there were
citizen (SSN-which I don't have)
permanent resident (required green card number)
international student (proof of document)
etc

Now I am not sure about the Ph.D program since there is a lot more funding if you are in the
program. My guess is that unless you have documents you can present to them that you are an international student it's most likely that they can't offer you with a position which is the ver reason I am taking a year off to save up money for my tuition >.< Anyways, best of luck to you=)

Also if you are applying for Ph.D program you must have a master's degree. Have you tried to find
jobs that would sponsor you and help you get a green card because if DA doesn't happen that's my only hope...

That's not entirely true, there are 3 year phd programs and 4 year programs where you seek/are accepted for phd w/o a masters.

I'll be seeking visa re-adjustment to international next semester so I can work for my master's. Basically you walk into the American consulate of your country, spill the beans (w/o saying more than what they ask) and plead for readjustment. Apparently the odds are better than one would think, but that was 3 yrs. ago so maybe things have changed.
