I applaud your decision. Just think if you re ready to leave this country forever or not.
I wouldn't say forever. Likely a 10 yr ban. If you are lucky enough and you leave discretely, they won't notice you were illegal when you try to come back.

You gotta be in VERY good economic standing (in whichever country you are) to get a tourist visa after being here illegally. :/.....those of us who have expired visas and live far away cant leave discreetly lol.

One very important question which no one really asked....where are you from originally? You don't have to name the country, just give a geographic area.

I assumed that you were from Eastern Europe but then you mentioned getting a visa to go to Russia, which made me wonder. Most places in Eastern Europe are either in the EU (which would open a lot of better doors than Russia) or are from a country with fairly close ties with the Russian Republic, making the necessary visa a formality.

Honestly, I would wait at least another year, for 2 reasons.

1. Obviously something might happen in the US that might improve our situation.

2. EU should expand somewhat soon (places like Ukraine and Belarus are the only 2 that are really left, and Ukraine is a very good candidate; I am not familiar enough with Belarus so I cannot really say) allowing you to obtain a EU passport and pick England or whatever place you want and study there.

======================================

However, I would still exhaust every possibility in the US if you identify with this country on an ideological level especially. Even with the EU passport, I still do not want to leave this country. Unfortunately, if things do not improve a lot of us will have no other choice.

Ukraine will not be allowed to join for at least 10yrs.

Belarus is not even on the roadmap for membership. They seek closer ties with Russia and will not be even considered for membership until the current regime is gone – the last dictatorship in Europe.

I think if any country joins anytime soon it will be Croatia - maybe 2011/12.
The smaller population would make it easier to integrate and would be a lot less 'threatening' to current EU citizens as far as jobs are concerned.

I'm from Ghana, West Africa, and I know what you mean by exhaust every possibility, but I feel like I have no choice. I don't have a job and don't know how to get one without an ssn, school is too much for my family, and don't want to stay home. Now here comes my uncle who sent his daughter to Russia and says that it would be a great place, and I go along with it because I dont know what else to do. But deep down its not my ideal situation at all. Just look up "Russia racism" on youtube and google, and you will see why Im scared. My cousin who gos there, a guy, says that it wont happen to me cuz Im a girl but Im scared to death. Also I dont want to live here illegally forever, Im not so young anymore.

Also I dont know if I mentioned this but I came here with fraudulent visa, so they tell me I could come back on a work and travel visa that these russian students get, but Im not sure I could because of so much I hear on how hard it is to get one on this board.

@hef107, the dream is the only I can get legal that I can think of, im not in a relationship with a citizen, and my parents are not citizens either, but I know what you mean about if the dream passes, because I would be heartbroken, but then again I cant stay here waiting for a piece of legislation.

@eddy yeah I know I have to leave this country if I want to go to one of those countries in good standing with the US, but Im scared about russia I'll show you why in my next post

@Ayame I'm not depending on it to change my situation, which is why Im trying to do something about it cuz I dont want to wait forever but what you said about marriage, I don't want to do a fake marriage and get caught in a lie, but i dont have prospects either.

one huge reason why Im hesitant about going to russia. I didnt know about this until a week or so ago. My uncle told me about the opportunity in russia a late june and everything happened so fast, at first I was nervous, but now Im not sure.
