Congress returns to session today with a long list of legislation to work out, but precious little time — 3-4 weeks — to do it. I’m going to take a look at the bills that Congress will tackle in this session, ranked from most likely to pass into law to least likely:

1.Small business bill
2.Continuing resolution
3.Bush tax cuts
4.Child nutrition bill
5.Food safety bill
6.Defense authorization bill
7.Obama economic plan

• Remainders. There’s a leftover “tax extenders” bill that includes a bunch of different tax cuts that have thus far not received an extension from 2009. FAA authorization awaits Senate action. Harry Reid put out an energy bill last week that may get some attention. Reid reportedly hinted that he would put the DREAM Act, allowing undocumented students a path to citizenship if they complete their higher education or military service, up for a vote.

In this segment of the La Opinión interview, which tackled the issue of immigration reform, Obama signaled his support for the proposed DREAM Act as part of a comprehensive reform package, but said he was open to discussing pushing it on its own as a “down payment” on reform if the Congressional Hispanic Caucus sees that as a viable strategy. Obama stated: “If in discussions with the Hispanic Caucus there’s a sense that there’s an opportunity to do this and that it would be helpful to provide a down payment on comprehensive immigration reform, I’m happy to have that conversation. I don’t want anyone to think that if we pass the DREAM Act in whatever form, that will solve the problem.”

“I think what’s been interesting has been the degree to which people have been expressing their frustration with me, someone who supports immigration reform, rather than critics—in some cases—the people who are opposed to it. That doesn’t make sense. I’m a strong ally, like no one in the Oval Office has ever been, when it comes to solving this problem.

I wonder if they'll try to attach it to the defense authorization bill like they did 3 years ago, and if that fails bring it up for a vote. De ja vu.

The article posted by lilbawler2001 says that if republicans win the house, immigration reform could be delayed for another 10-20 years.

We have to get DA as a stand alone for this year otherwise we have to wait another 10-20 years!

I hope they will do it. To be truly honest I want to see congressional action on the bill, even if it fails.

I wonder could they just write the defence authorization to contain DA in it to begin with (lemme change that, will they cause I know you CAN put anything you want in the bill as long as its fine according to US constitution), rather than add it during debate. That way DA won't need 60 votes, the whole package will need 51 (under Byrd's rule*) votes to pass and have debate time cut to 50 hours.

* - aka reconciliation (only two good things i can say about byrd are reconciliation and the fact that he's dead)

Is the Defense authorization bill the "Repeal Don't Ask Don't Tell" bill ?

If so I have a lot of faith in it passing because Lady Gaga is having her fans call Harry Reid in masses.

Guess its going to work

Senator Reid announced today that he will be bringing the repeal of DADT to the Senate floor next week for a vote. Now we must be ready to act, to tell our Senators to vote YES and repeal DADT once and for all!

Gaga gets shit done in Washington. I wish she was more vocal about dream rather than just wearing a shirt showing support for it. To be honest, I bet she doesn't even know what Dream Act is probably a fan just told her to wear it that day.
