As far as I know, only 2 states will let you take the NCLEX and that is : New York and Vermont.

Here's a little bit of my story: I happen to be fortunate enough to have graduated here in NY and so I took the NCLEX here back in August 2010. Two days after the test date, I found out that I passed online on the Pearson Website! I couldn't wait for the results, so I paid for the quick results service lol. I was just happy that I passed. I wasn't expecting to get a license. All I knew was that NY state will keep my passing score for years to come until things get resolved. But to my surprise, I found a thick white envelope on the mailbox containing my license...I was HAPPY lol...Such a surge of emotion that came to me...

So yea, I have no idea how I got it...but I got it...lol. We deserve this after all the hard work were put through in nursing school.

Did you have a social? Or did you use a ITIN? Congrats by the way What are you hoping to do with the license? Immigrate to another country? Or will you wait for DREAM to pass?

When you apply, your school is supposed to give proof to the board of nursing that you have graduated. And then you send in your application. As for me, I placed my ITIN but I clearly marked that it was an ITIN and not a social. (I made a little note under the line where it says social)

And thanks! As for my license, well this is my home...I grew up here and so I would LOVE to have the opportunity to work here and finally truly start contributing to society.

Good luck to all my nursing colleagues! Stay strong...

I have no idea how the guy from New York got it... they clearly ask you in the application what your immigration status is... unless you checked citizen and wrote your ITIN.... there's not "undocumented" section in the application.

Vermont is for sure, you can apply. Yes, like the other poster said you don't have to fly there you can take the test anywhere you want and just apply to a particular state.

California is NO NO. We can no longer get our license or take the NCLEX via California board of nursing.

I called Texas and they don't require SSN. So Texas is an option. Vermont doesn't require background check but Texas does but background check isn't a problem for us, I just did one month a go.

good luck people! Where there is a will... there is a way. As frustrating as this process has been... I am realizing that there is a way as long as you want it bad enough.

I found a good RN to BSN program that's completely online, cheap, and accredited. They will accept Vermont License as well. University of Texas Arlington rn to bsn program

i am gonna get that BSN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm from TX and I WAS in a BSN program but my school kicked me out during my 2nd semester for three major reasons.

1) They couldn't get me clinical spots since hospitals are now requiring SSN and/or valid ID just to do clinicals
2) To be able to take NCLEX, you not only have to get a background check, but also be fingerprinted by the FBI.
3) Texas Board of Nursing requires a valid SSN to take NCLEX (read here)

I'm not sure about the person that you talked to, geronimo. Maybe I should call them too to double check but it seems to me that they require SSN. Either way, my school won't let me back in until I provide a valid ID and SSN

dude that sucks. well I am doing it through Vermont... but board of nursing from Texas told me for sure that they don't require SSN esp since foreign nurses don't have it.

BTW u can get your fingerprint checked through FBI. Live scan is the same thing and I did it, it's just for criminal background check purposes.

The real issue for you is the clinical sites. It wouldn't matter for NCLEX because you can apply for NCLEX under Vermont. The only reason the school shouldn't let you in is due to clinical spots. However, in our area only government hospital requires SSN for clinicals such as VA.

Sorry to hear about that. Maybe you can transfer to a community college program where they don't have that requirements? Or other community college programs in diff state? Then you can do online program like mine to get your BSN?

So you got your background check through Live Scan? Because I tried to get my background check+fingerprints through them but I couldn't do it because they required a valid DL/ID. I only have an expired passport. I ended up going with GroupOne to get my background check. They don't offer fingerprints though. How would we get our fingerprints done with the FBI?

Yeah it seems like my school just gave up on me. At first they were very supportive...but then now I think they just got tired of helping me. Is your school helpful with your situation? Do they make sure to assign you to hospitals that won't have any issues with your status?

So here's what happend to me:

For the application, I put my ITIN and I clearly indicated right under it that it was a tax ID# and not a social. There was actually a problem with my school, since my school sent them the 9 digit student ID they generated for me. So this did not match the ITIN# I gave them on the application. I had to call them explaining the whole situation and the lady that picked up was nice and fixed everything.

So anyways as for the immigration status part, I left it blank the first time and sent it...THEN they sent me a letter through the mail saying that it was incomplete...So I went to my lawyer and she told me to check letter

H. Non-Immigrant.

Then next to it, I wrote down B-2 Visa.

Then I wrote down my control number (which I found on my I-94) under the USCIS number spot.

So yea...thats what I did and it worked for me.

Not sure what kind of Visa you have when you entered, but for me it was visitors (B-2)...and thats why I have a control number/I-94.

I remember when I took the exam, all they did was scan my palm and take a picture of me. I also showed them my unexpired non-US passport.

I'm not sure if it will work with other people, but hey its good to know info about these stuff. I know my other classmate who is in the same situation did the same thing and got her license. But honestly, I wasn't expecting a license. I was just scared that I will not be able to take the exam after 2 years of hard work...But hey...we are certainly deserving of the license

Hopefully this info helps you guys and things work out.

GOODLUCK on the application and ofcourse...the NCLEX!!!
