As an opponent to those kinds of people all you can do is laugh in their faces because there's nothing they can really do, there's no reason to disclose your legal status, that would only bring you more problems.

One of the people started a random discussion on the strict gun control laws of Chicago out of no-where, and we started to get distracted in that direction, it somehow went to the lax laws in Texas, and how you could legally shoot someone trespassing on your property, and then it went a direction I did not expect it would take.

They proclaimed their interest in buying property along the Mexico/US border in Texas, put sandtraps, and landmines as well as using snipers to snipe "illegal" immigrants just for fun.

one of the people in the group claimed he could pick out an undocumented immigrant very easily because they were lazy and spoke spanish, the other person claimed that they would not be deported if only they raised the US flag instead of the mexican flag and sang the national anthem for the US, celebrated the 4th of July, and wore red, white and blue clothing (the kind that is made to look like the american flag with the stars and stripes), and that then he would not have any problem.

I was just shocked and could not muster the guts to say anything, and the third person from the group who is usually very talkative was rather quiet, he is Mexican/American, US born, but still, Mexican parents, and they both knew that.

When they asked me about my status I lied, I did not know what else to do after hearing all of those claims.

Have any of you faced something similar? How did you or would you deal with it?

I said I was hungry and left, even though I was hungry I could not eat, I could not study any more, and I could not sleep at night. Somehow I wish I had found the guts to tell them how wrong they where, and this was after I had started to become more active and learned that there are 57 undocumented students coming in next semester with 17 students doing doctoral thesis in my university from the undergraduate admissions with whom I am working to do some sort of outreach, after detailing my plans with the counseling services to try and reach to the undocumented youth whose numbers are not known other than to say there are a lot, and my interest in starting a group. All of that, I questioned whether I should continue for a second. I will still continue, but the group idea might have to be underground in nature, at least at the beginning, but I still find myself thinking back to that day and wishing I could have done things differently.
most of these people are cowards and would change their minds at at sight of someone going against their belief directly. ive had this happen and i told em i was illegal ( i have no accent and look american) they said they were JP and they didnt rlly believe it and said they were sorry. couple months later i heard they were starting coonversations on supporting immigrants. sometimes i feel like just straight punching them in the face while they talk but thatle just make things worse.. as for the people you met there... i dont know.. if i saw someone talking about killing illegals for fun ide probably just start the fight lol

I get what you say about these people's reactions once they find out who you are but they still have affiliations with the rest of the bigots, it's part of their identity and they are generally just not going to renounce to that lifestyle completely. It's like this video of a KKK member who befriended some black dude who strangely enough still supports the clan, or the minuteman guy living with illegal immigrants for 30 days who despite knowing how shitty they have it he still patrols the border XD.

But I don't think they are the kkk or minutemen kind of people, they were just ill informed, and its one of my biggest regrets, not correcting the misinformation. In all likelihood they actually believed that everyone that does not speak english is undocumented and they are the only undocumented immigrants, that fixing your status is as easy as actually learning the language and dressing differently.

In any case I hope to address all of this next semester, already working on several projects with that goal in mind.

I've been in a similar situation before.. my friends were talking about illegal immigrants taking advantage of people with the papers by marrying them. It made me mad because I wouldn't marry a person just for their papers - that's totally using them! I told one of the guys later about my status and how those comments hurt me but who cares. The average american doesn't no anything when it comes to immigration. LOL.

I've been in similar situations before. But, I usually hang around a crowd of liberal people so I've never been in serious situations. However, I am a BITCH. I don't give a fuck who it is, but I usually bitch people out when they talk shit about my culture and my legal status. I am very open about it and I usually tell a lot of people. But since they think I'm smart, they usually respect me. Let me tell you if I was you, I would have bitched them out and made them see the truth. Sorry, that's just me...I'm a big bitch LOL

If I was in that situation I would probably just ignore their comments. Most of the time I just stay quiet because if I speak up then they will probably think I'm undocumented and then I'm just going to be afraid of what they may think of me.

Hope the exam you were studying for went great though!
