True. But, I think we would go into the system either way--whether through arrest and detention or registration via a lawyer.

just adding this here:

unfortunately this is kind of a double edge sword to those thinking of migrating elsewhere because most other applications ask whether you've been in deportation in some other country.

It feels like am a part of an alternate reality here, this are good news or not so good news? What happens if you get in proceedings because your tire popped and you are caught without a license? They have to define what is the threshold.

The language suggests that your case has to be pending (i.e. you're in proceedings) in order to apply for work authorization. It is highly unlikely that there would be some mass "registration" program lest it turn into an administrative legalization program.

THIS IS GOOD NEWS PEOPLE:

1. They won't initiate deportation on you

2. Even if you are in deportation, they will CLOSE the case

3. You can apply for benefits like work permit if your case is closed by the USCIS.

Just don't do anything stupid (drugs, gangs, driving without license etc...) and stay in school and you will be safe.

Not driving means I would have to give away my awesome engineering job. I cannot not work, I need to make money in order to pay for school. I am trapped.

Since when is "driving without a license" something stupid. What country do you live in?? Are you stupid or what?
