i'm going to move in to this apartment near my school in LA with 3 of my roommates.
The manager asked us to separately file our applications because he said it's just much easier. There is a section where I am asked to fill out my driver's license and social security number. Apparently, my roommate asked him if we could put any other form of identification on there (she asked for me because she knows my status).
So I was gonna put down my passport id# and tax id#. But my mother just told me to put down my expired CA driver's license number and my social security number that's only valid with the work authorization card (?) which is also expired.

What do you guys think?

Any way your 3 roommates can just apply for the residence and completely ignore you for that part? Or do you have to file an application to get a certain room?

I would think so if they are going to run a credit check...This is bizarre...Last time I rented a house with some of my friends, the broker asked for only three or four of their information and it was sufficient. Usually the landlord doesn't care who's living there as long as he/she gets the rent on time. Is there any way another friend of yours can apply?

If I were you, I would follow your mom's advice. Your SSN is valid, it's just like any other SSN. You can use it for anything other than employment. And your driver's license is not valid for driving. You should be able to use it for other purposes.

You can get a credit card if you have a valid SSN. There are secured credit cards that allow you to build up a credit history.

If you have a SSN you don't need an ITIN and there's nothing for you to do with an ITIN. ITIN it just a tax id number for someone who don't have a SSN and don't qualify for one. Even that your SSN is not valid for work, its still a SSN and it's in the system and if one day you get a green card this SSN will be the same.

Use your SSN in all applications and you can also start building your credit history if you have an ITIN and you can easily get a secured credit card with a minimum of $200 deposit from Wells Fargo.

You can only use that SSN for WORK with work permit, but you can use it for other stuff which are not work without problems

I had a similar situation when I was in college. Any way your parents or a relative can cosign for you? That way they'll do a credit check on your cosigner.

I remember being really stressed about this.
As far as ID, I just showed them my College ID and my Dad did the cosigning.

I hate stressing about the most simplest things in life. For us, everything is a hassle.

Good luck!
