Oh yeah, those damn immigrants should learn the official language of the U.S.! Oh wait, the U.S. doesn't have an official language? hmmm... well them damn foreigners still need to go back to their country!

immigrants will always be accused of not learning the language. goes back to the Germans, Irish, Italian, Chinese, whatever else. the fact of the matter is that by the third generation, immigrants are almost completely acculturated. The attack on Spanish speakers is because currently immigrants are predominantly from Latin America. The next immigrant group will have the same arguments against them as current xenophobes/current members of this board have now by future xenophobes/future members of boards like this.

as a little treat for Halloween, read what Ben Franklin said about them damn, stupid non English-learnin', non-assimilating Germans!

While having an accent is rather involuntary, knowledge of English at an at least intermediate level should be required. There are literally millions of legal and illegal immigrants who were way too lazy to learn that eventually the system did not want to deal with it anymore and started to provide translations in other languages, most often Spanish.

When you actually stop to think about it, this problem affects virtually all areas of the economy and government. When you go to a govt. building and you see instructions in two different languages, they did not get translated on their own. Somebody had to do that, and thus somebody had to be paid for this service. Everything has to be printed twice as well, and all this stuff costs money, which either comes out of your taxes or causes an increase in the price of a given product.

Unfortunately, the system just decided that it is less problematic to make a child wear a helmet, than to make him learn through his own mistakes.

oh noes, the economy will crumble.....

you fail to mention that this is a 2-way street. The revenue created by those businesses who took the time to provide services in other languages broadening their market share. That or the paid hours saved by hiring bilingual speaking employees to deal w/spanish speakers.

I don't know how people get jobs from craigslist, it seems like there's nothing but scams or phishing for personal information. Personally from now on I'm going to be doing the job hunting by foot.

ok this is off topic..but I've been reading on here about other dreamers having success opening bank accounts and credit cards to possibly build credit. Has anyone in the NYC area tried this at a Bank Of America/ Chase or any other Bank?

I used to have WAMU, which became chase, so I now have an account with them. I also have other family members that have opened one with BOA, so it's definitely possible. You just have to go in, bring your passport and ITIN card.

Yaaaaay, I now have an account with Bank of America! that wasn't so hard..i feel like i should have done this years ago, just goes to show how crippling fear of the unknown can be. The account specialist I had was very pleasant and just asked for my passport, which i gave her along with my ITIN and in a matter of minutes I was taking a picture for my debit card. Whoop whoop

I"ve been living in NYC for almost 8 yrs since I was 14 and I've never had any trouble finding a job that pays cash. Did part time job ever since I was in high school, worked for one of the fast food franchise chain, and I work in a restaurant now. Not the kind of work that relates to my major in college tho, which is suck, but for now, gotta do what I gotta do. Just don't be too picky with what you want to do I guess, and you'll be fine.
