Hi everyone,

I've got a letter from my college offering a scholarship. I have to go to some kind of workshop and learn how to apply for it. However, I use my ITIN instead of SS. Now I don't know if I will be eligible.

Should I go ahead and do the application? Do I am in risk if I apply in this situation?

Thank you.

Obs: I got into college for the first time before 9/11. At this time, it was ok to add ITIN if you don't have SS. But this is a different college.

First things first, congratulations! So happy to here that you've been accepted, and that you're up for scholarships! Its super exciting.

Now, the whole ITIN... idk. If scholarships are being awarded through the school then chances are the ITIN thing won't fly because they already know you're undocumented. If it's private scholarships, maybe you can get away with it.

But every school has different policies. For example, my school is a state school. It's a public university so technically they aren't legally allowed to give me any federal money. However, somehow they found a loophole, and they do not hesitate to give undocumented kids scholarships. Some of them are private, and come from alumnus, but most of them are scholarships through the school. What I'm saying is, every school has different policies. You have to ask. My school won't ever say "Btw, undocumented students, apply! We give out scholarships" because that could get them in trouble. They can't offer financial aide but they offer scholarships.

The only way I found out about what my school has to offer is because someone asked for me (I would have asked but this school never crossed my mind before) and we moved from there.

No one on this board (unless they have experience with that school) can give you an answer because it varies from school to school. Best advice anyone can give you is to ask them so that you know all of your facts first hand.

Depends on the school.

If you know the name of the scholarship, you can look up what the requirements for it are.

I found out more about scholarships because I went to a AB540 scholarship workshop. My school even has a class dedicated for helping undocumented students apply for scholarship. So you should ask around.

Yep, it depends on the school. For example, I went to a state school and I did not qualify for anything. My brother goes to a private school, he gets a full ride... :\
