Depends on the state. California: yes. Here in NY they require the actual card to be presented, according to their guidelines. However I don't know if they would make an exception and accept the printout. It doesn't hurt to try and I might do it myself ones I get my printout.

Went to the SSA today to apply for my SSN. Received my employment authorization card Oct. 3rd but decided to wait out the 10 days and I can report that it payed off. The attendant was able to verify my employment authorization card on the spot and told me I could return for a printout of my new SSN tomorrow. He told me the SSN card would arrive in about 7-10 days and gave me the receipt letter that states the 2 week mailing time.

Definitely recommend waiting the 10 days after the EAD approval to apply for a SSN. Of course you can go sooner but it seems there's a high probability of being stuck in limbo, something I wanted to avoid.

Another thing for those of us who worked with a fake social: the attendant told me I could go back with my tax returns and ITIN and that they would transfer the social security benefits accumulated on the false SSN I was using to my new number. When he sensed my hesitation at the idea he informed me that SSA would not penalize me, or anyone for that matter, and straight out said, "We are not immigration, if you worked for those benefits you deserve credit for them and we can grant them to you." Awesome guy, and awesome experience overall.

I wish I got a "2 week mailing" notice. I went on the 12th day and got the standard "4 week verification" notice

Great info! Wish all associates at SSA were that caring and informed.

sorry, I misspoke. I meant to ask separately if we could just go to the dmv with a print out of the social sec number. I didn't actually get the print out, but she said it would be ready in a day or two at most.

Has anyone gone to the NY DMV with just a print out and the 2-week receipt notice and gotten a permit/id?

I went to my local SSA office and I turned in everything and I got a receipt that I applied for a social, there is no reference number on it. It just says that I applied for a social on 10/09, and to come back if I don't get it in the mail within two weeks. It says nothing about a waiting period/hold or that my documents are still being verified. I didn't know about the print 0ut so I didn't ask. But when should I go back to get a print out?

I got the same thing today. Maybe your SSA officer didn't tell you, but mine told me I could come back tomorrow or the day after tomorrow to get a print out which will have my SSN on it.

THANK YOU,glad someone finally said it and initiated this.No individual should have to work for years for SS credits and not have them assigned to their own SSN,even if afraid.Kudos Sir or Ma'am!

Do you need to have your EAD in hand when you go to the SS office to apply for a SSN?
