It's either-or, a valid passport (non expired) or a birth certificate.

I went this morning, and I can tell you that a valid passport will make things easier, quick comparison between another DACA applicant and myself:

First off we both waited 10+ days just in case since the issue, that's still seems unclear.

The other person had EAD, Valid passport, and the app: took maybe 15 minutes tops after several basic questions, also helps the counter lady was super nice.

Myself: State issued DL (didn't do squat), EAD, and a birth certificate (original + translated + certification). Ran into a grouchy guy, only asked me ONE question ("did you have one before?")

First he tells me I need a valid passport (which I can't get) or he can't take the application, I show him the birth certificate paperwork. Silence, and then he looked irritated, was inputting something in the computer for about 30 minutes, possibly looking up sample copies of what they're supposed to look like.

In the end we both received receipt saying it'll be arriving in 2 weeks, more likely within the week though from what I've read. I didn't bother asking about the print out copy since he already looked pissed off.

I went in today and my passport is expired since 2010. They asked to see it, and just in case I took my original birth certificate along with a certified translation. No problems at all, now I'm waiting for my SSN
