It seems the issue concerning immigration is going to be dealt with very early in the second term of the President.Perhaps it is time for a call list? I've also noticed the anti-immigrants are trying to raise money against the any upcoming immigration effort.
Quote:
WASHINGTON — President Obama expects to see a comprehensive immigration reform bill introduced in Congress “very soon” after his inauguration in late January, he said during a press conference Wednesday.

“I am very confident we can get immigration reform done,” said Obama.

Obama said that White House staff has already begun conversations with members of the Senate and the House on how to line up the votes to get an immigration bill to his desk for signing.

“We need to seize the moment,” said Obama, adding that he is “already seeing signs” that some Republicans are willing to discuss the immigration issue.

In the days after Obama was reelected with over 70% of the Latino vote, some top Republicans -- including House speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) and Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) -- signaled that they are open to drafting a comprehensive package of new immigration laws.

Obama outlined what he would like to see included in an immigration reform package but did not answer a question about whether or not he would send a draft of the legislation to Congress to consider. Mitt Romney criticized Obama during the campaign for not sending an immigration reform bill to Congress during his first term despite a long-standing promise to make the issue a priority.

Any package would have to continue strong border security measures, enact serious penalties for companies purposely hiring undocumented workers as well as create a pathway to legal status for those living in this country, he said. An avenue for legal status would have to require applicants to learn English and pay back taxes and a fine, he said.

A bill would also have to protect young immigrations who were brought to the country illegally by their parents, said Obama.

“Young people who came here through no fault of their own, they should not be under the cloud of deportation,” he said
. The Obama administration launched a program in August that has awarded work permits to more than 20,000 young immigrants who came to the country as children. The initiative, called the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, is widely cited as an important motivating factor for convincing record numbers of Latino voters to come out in favor of Obama in election day.

Obama said he was pleased to see voter turnout go up among Latinos in the Presidential election. More political engagement from Hispanic voters is “good for the country,” said Obama.

I have been on this website since 2009 and can't recall this level of optimism and enthusiasm.

True! The moment surely does seem to be there. However, Obama needs to capture this moment and make shit happen. Talk is cheap but then again talk is better than no talk!

Great news for us and our families and friends!!! I am so excited; I cannot wait to watch the debates on CSPAN next year. If it happens, I am going to cry and chant my balls off "USA! USA! USA!" Fucking love this country, nuff said.

Stupid question, but is there anything we can do to put the pressure on the evolutionized moderates to continue the pragmatic rhetoric? It's funny what's happening with the GOP on the isssue, and we cannot resist the urge to criticize and to mock. But, I feel like we need to do something . . . in terms of contacting/working with the GOP.

Would you guys accept passage of a bill that will include "no path to citizenship".
But will always be on a permanent legal presence basis.
I know that once you get your green card, as it stands now, it does not matter how you got your green card, you can eventually apply for citizenship. So they will have to amend some US immigration code for certain people.

I know this sounds harsh and kind of bowing to the right, but this will for sure secure many and ample re-pube-blican votes for passage.

^ no because that create a second-class of citizens which will just lead to more problems.

Not trying to get all emotional and personal. But I'm going to go ahead and say this. Right now Obama and any other congressman who works towards CIR is like God to my family. For the first time ever, EVERYONE in my family is starting to see a little glimpse of light that is becoming brighter exponentially as each day arrives. I just can't wait till the minute EVERYONE in my family gets work and travel authorization. That's all we want. We're half way there with DACA.

I would accept just legal residency, then marry my boyfriend, and get my citizenship that way.

But here's why that's not the right move for the GOP: they changed their tune about immigration to get votes. They can't get more votes if the people they legalize don't eventually become citizens who CAN vote. Otherwise, they're cheating themselves out of 11 million potential votes.

The main difference between being a citizen and a permanent resident are voting rights.

I don't see how it would lead to any problems.
