Who was in JROTC? What where your duties or obligations in the highest rank that you achieved? Did you take the ASVAB, what did you think about it?

I was searching for a similar thread and was surprised to find that the only one that existed was from over 3 years ago, did not feel right to revive something so old.

Recently I discovered that there are branches in the military that will require in some cases at least a high school graduation, furthermore, to be considered even in the same light as a high school graduate if you had a GED you would need to take 15 college credits, and that will only get you to start at the very beginning.

But for those of us that completed JROTC, there were additional perks, if we choose to go into the military (assuming we could) we would not start in the beginning, and would immediately be promoted 2 rank positions, have a higher salary to start, and why, because we were already trained, and JROTC costs the military branches quite a bit of money, its their investment.

So for those that went through JROTC, there was not only an investment made on them by voters, but also by the military branches, I was just curious who went there and what people managed to achieve.

I was in it all 4 years of high school, we were a NJROTC unit.
Freshman- Highest rank I got was Petty officer 3rd class and a squad leader.
Sophomore- Petty Officer 2nd Class and platoon guide.
Junior- Lieutenant and Company Commander.
Senior- Same rank just moved up to Batallion logistics officer.

ASVAB was pretty easy, there were parts where I was like wtf, but for the most part its nothing too difficult.

All 4 years of H.S. At first I didn't take it seriously and would skip wearing my uniform, until my team took me around back and beat me with soap bars wrapped in pillow sheets (j/k). I got my shit together and took it seriously for the remainder of my years. I don't remember earning anything out of ordinary, didn't sign up for drill competition or color-guard.

Don't remember my rank. It was a while ago.

We could sign up for ASVAB, but our Colonel said it's only valid for odd number of years after you take it, then you have to take it again. Since I was ILLEGAL IS ILLEGAL WHAT PART OF ILLEGAL DONT YOU UNDERSTAND, I didn't take it knowing I wouldn't be able to do anything with it.

Good times though, once we were taken to a National Guard base nearby and we ran obstacles and fired weapons(virtual reality though, no live ammo).

We had some pretty sweet field trips, we went to:

Miami to look at some ships that were docked and a submarine.
Parris Island for 3 days 2 nights.
Patrick Air Force base
Some other ships

and the fun trips were like busch gardens, aquatica, the beach, and other parks like that.

I also did not take JROTC too seriously the first couple of years, barely increased my rank the first three years (I was an E-4 senior year), but then the fourth year as a senior they placed me as a squad leader after the squad leader left to another class and then it became interesting. In the matter of maybe 4 months I went from being a squad leader to a platoon leader to an event organizer and finally became one of the top three with the position of Command Master Chief and a rank of Master Chief Petty Officer.

The top two were the Battalion Commander and the Assistant Battalion Commander they were in charge of only the officers, while my very rigged position allowed me a say in who those officers where and I performed similar functions of the BC but for everyone else that was not an officer in rank.

It was so much fun.

They gave us the ASVAB sophmore year or junior year to everyone, not just people in JROTC, and apparently got a high enough score that I could get into any of the military branches, if only I could, for a while recruiters where sending me letters and calling my home number. Sad thing is that I actually enjoyed the order and structure of JROTC and would have liked to join...

The trips were fun, we rented out a sail ship and navigated the ship down to the keys for a couple days. not very easy to sleep in a ship that makes all kinds of sounds and rocks all the time...

Does anyone here know of anyone who is currently in JROTC? I'm working on a project and looking for current stories involving Dreamers in JROTC. Thanks!

I was in Navy JROTC my first 2 years of High School, got to E2 first year and E5 second year, I went to the leadership I would had been an officer if I had continued on my junior year but it was when I had the deppression that I would not be able to do anything with it so I didn't take it anymore

I had an interest in joining since middle school but because I knew I wouldn't be able to do anything and in fact some people even told me I would have to join (so not true) I didn't even bother. I remember in HS seeing people in their ROTC uniforms and wishing I had been in it.

ROTC prepares college students become officers in the military. However, one of the requirements to become an officers is to be a USC.
