I learned English, worked and paid taxes. I don't have a crimial record here nor back in my country.

My question is: do all the illegal immigrants deserve a green card? Are they going to do something positive with it? Will they give back to the country?Or will they became leeches and get into welfare as soon as they can?

I have met many immigrants who have been here for 20 years (I have been here for less than who cannot speak ANYTHING in English. I find it offensive. Back i my country, I hated when tourists didn't speak my language and I find it wrong that someone lives here for years and doesn't bother to learn English.

I think they should give priority to the immigrants who learned English. I think they are right in charging us a fine, but I doubt they will have luck with charging people back taxes; most people probably don't even remember their incomes of 2-5 years ago, imagine 10+ years ago!

I think they should create a rule that forbids people to get into welfare or file for bankruptcy within 5 years from getting the amnesty. And I think they shouldn't allow people to give green cards to their family members; that way people won't start bringing all their relatives to this country (maybe only the ones from war-torn countries should be ok).

I know I probably upset a lot of people reading this, but I am thinking about this country and I am afraid many immigrants will get into welfare, bring more people to be on welfare and the country will just be like the ones many people ran from.

Opinions?
1. I don't think i am above anyone just because I over stayed my visa. I am in the same level as everyone else . I have to agree with some points you make.

2. It's unfortunate that the Hispanic community doesn't have a strong leadership. I have family here with years in the USA but they can't speak English, I've had fights about this. How can the immigrant community reach it's full potential without knowing English? I saw it the news, they were marching in Chicago demanding a stop to deportations in Spanish. I got to go to a CIR mega march in Las Vegas in 2010, senator Harry Reid and senator Gutierrez were there, and could hear the crowd asking others to translate. I mean Really ??? The media instead of reminding people about the importance of English, they present everything in Spanish, and those so called leaders never ever tell the viewers to learn English. The immigrant community is filled with complacency. I am not trying to generalize everyone, but the sad fact is that there is a majority of people that need to start putting some effort when it comes to learning English. I YouTube sometimes some of the best orators of history, I feel that's what we need, someone like MLK or Churchill , and the whole community on the same page.

3. I did public speaking at some universities about the dream and it's importance. I saw the power, the effect it had on people who didn't know about immigration reform. I saw how they would approach me and ask more questions, and even ask if I could talk in their churches or classes. I didn't speak to them for recognition, rather, because i was tired of my undocumented status.

4. I think it's a good thing they enforce the English part. If a 10 year old immigrant student learned both Spanish and English at the same time, so can an adult do it, enough with excuses.

5.I think they want to give immigrants green cards that got a STEM degrees. I think that would help those immigrants that did everything right.

6. The immigrant community can't start getting welfare and other benefits right away, it's not right, it does not help the cause.

I believed a lot of people isn't taking the time to read. I stated what is my situation in here, just like many did, but I never said that I wasn't illegal or that I am better because I came to the country legally.

Yes, most Hispanic immigrants really don't care about learning English yet they bring their culture and food to the US and they are welcome. Why can't they bother? Someone earlier mentioned that it can be hard for some people to learn English but many never eve bother trying.

I have met Asian immigrants that understand everything you say in English, yet they cannot say a word. I don't know how they do it, but they just do.

Reading comprehension is really lacking in this place.

Are you 100% sure you're fluent in English? Judging by your posts you're lacking some serious grammar. Hell, I don't even speak, read, or speak English(Thank God for Google translate) I've worked since I was 18 and paid my taxes. So am I worthy of getting a green card according to you?

Look at your posts and your initial one its full of errors. If you see any errors in this post remember, I'm an immigrant who is using Google translate.

Aren't you highly critical about that comment? Did you just stoop to a low point making a comment like that in such a way, that you condoned as being a "child" in the other post about the posts of other users? That is hypocritical I must say. Furthermore, you pride yourself in learning English and such, however, your grammar is lacking in the tenses...

I learned English, I never stated I was fluent.
Reading comprehension means UNDERSTANDING what you are reading, not writing properly. That means people are reading yet they are not understanding.

Why haven't you learned English? Do you live in a rural area? I live in a big city and there are plenty of ESL schools but I know not every school throughout the country offers ESL classes.

You aren't making yourself clear when you highlight something I wrote, call me critical yet you don't condone other people's poor behavior.
I called another poster a child due to its offensive language and lack of manners. Some people just weren't brought up well.

Do you have any opinion about this thread? Do you believe all immigrants deserve the amnesty? That was the question and few answered it.

No I'm a homeless, that live off welfare, food stamps, and cash aid... Does it affect you in any way? Oh and I have cellphone as well. I've never bother to learn English. I rather watch sponge Bob on YouTube. Let me also mention that I've just applied for financial aid. Does it really matter to YOU if I get a green card? Is it going to make YOUR life any different?

It depends what happens to the country once a lot of former illegal immigrants get the green card and decide to apply for welfare. How will the country support more people on welfare?

I really hope you are just being sarcastic because that's really sad if you are in this situation and you act like it's ok.
