I can be paid from NSF/NIH grants that the lab/dept has just like any international student (with DACA). For personal fellowships, while only USC and LPR qualify for NSF fellowships, I am applying for a Howard Hughes fellowship. It is for international students.

I am pursuing a PhD because I love research. I want to stay in academia. Masters in my field are worthless.

+1. There are many jobs that offer to pay for school for you. I should have waited for mine but I couldn't take advantage of the program because of no papers. Now with daca you have more options.

I heard that a PhD is not really worth it because the pay is not that much higher if you have a Masters degree and it takes more years of college.

I'm going to major in Mechanical Engineering
I haven't applied yet.
My mom is going to help me out and hopefully I can get a job.
You are too early in the game. Worry about the next 4 years. You can worry about it your last two years, but if you are doing engineering I think a B.A. is enough unless you want to be a researcher.

are most schools "nice" to people like us? or is it usually private schools? I'm just looking for programs (competitive ones), I've got the brains, I just need the means. Research experience is decent, no publications (only a poster). Doing my MBA, then seeing how things work out. If MD is no go, then PhD is my back up.. just want to get an idea of what schools would be willing to pay for me.

Man, are there any liberal arts majors here that can help me out? I want to do post bachelor's degree school but I have no idea about the post grad stuff. I never bothered to find out because I honestly never thought I'd graduate with a BA but now that I did, I have no idea what to do with it.

I have a BA in Communication (without the S, as in rhetoric, mass, and organizational commnunication).

See this (pre-DACA):

http://dreamact.info/forum/showthrea...owship+stipend

The number of spots available for internationals is very limited, so admission is ultra competitive.

Doesnt matter if theyre nice to people like us. They all take internationals. You have to be confident, strong and be in control of the situation. Most scientists i spoke to dont care about what you have or dont have on paper. Its all about your approach and your skill set when it comes to science. I had a meeting with a director at an ivy and by the end of it he was telling me that I need to apply and he will help me / put in a good word for me. He was surprised at the situation, but at the end of the day he understood that I would be worth any risks. A PhD is pretty different anyways. You can use it in any country. Science will pretty much be the same science no matter where you go. I think unless youre in texas, its not worth applying to MD, unless you have the money up front. Most schools dont even look at us, we are not worth the risk (rightfully so in my opinion. If i was an admissions director at a medical school...unless you were extraordinary, i wouldnt even consider taking a risk).

Also, pubs arent necessary. I have one + one poster, but its not a requirement. Youre not expected to do science at a high level in undergrad, but you are expected to gain some exposure and learn some techniques.

I can help you, but it really depends...what did you envision yourself doing when you pursued the BA in communication? If you have an answer, I can give you the resources to find the next step. If you are going to tell me you went with whatever was there lol...then i would advice you to reevaluate your career choice.
