and ooppsss! to answer your original original question, I don't recommend you to keep both of your DL! One valid license is good to go!

Wait, are you serious that I can just swap cards without taking test (both written and road tests)?

I guess I will just give up WA license.

I don't know... Personally I have been attached to this license because I had to make a trip to WA three times due to very unfortunate happenings each time. But now that I think about it, I don't mind giving it up because CA DL is what I really need.

yeah basically again if you are caught with two of them you could get in trouble

xfd wait it doesn't even matter as soon you try to get a DL from CA it will pop out that you already have one from WA

nvm this thread is moot to be honest

I see from the DMV website. It says,
" If you have a license from another country, you will be required to take a driving test. If you have a license from another state, the driving test can be waived."

it says "CAN BE," not "WILL BE." Any CA DREAMer who held WA DL got their tests waived by swapping the license?

Haha, I really don't feel like studying for the test.

NVM. Based on googling, it seems I need to take written exam even though I hold valid WA DL. But it says the road test can be waived. Going to hit the dmv book now and see how it goes tomorrow.

Thanks.
The law is (I think after 9/11) that you can only have one Driver's License. Most places also require you to change your license after moving into the new state -usually after 2 weeks-month. When you do that, you surrender your old license, they invalidate it (punching a hole in it or cutting it or something and also it goes on record) and issue you the new one and you get your new one without taking the test. You still have to meet residency requirements of the state, take an eye test, etc. of course.

I suppose you could not tell them about it and you didn't give a SSN to WA, they may or may not find out about it, but you will be committing fraud if you have two licenses if you retake the test. I can appreciate how after working so hard to get a DL in WA, you may not want to give it up, but if you have DACA, there is no reason not to have the current license in your own state and it's the right thing to do. Getting a WA DL was a desperate move for many of us because we had no other way, but when you have a legal way to do something, it goes against the Dreamer code to not follow it. That's what this fight is about after all.

And remember, life is a lot easier to have your own state's license if you're pulled over, ticketed, got in an accident, buying a car, getting insurance, opening up a bank account, getting an apartment, etc.

I'm still not sure what the rule is on having an ID from one state and DL in another.
