What is your major and what kind of internships did you apply to?

I am Civil/Environmental Engineering major. I basically just googled engineering firms around me and asked if they had any internships available. I sent out 400 emails. Got a few replies and eventually got 3 acceptances. I even do this thing where I go onto Craigslist and even search for full time positions and email them telling them I don't need a job but would love an internship. I had to do all this cause competition around here is ridiculous. But I got it in the end and that's all that matters.

I got hired for a mechanical engineering gig with no work experience based solely on my GPA (3.9-ish overall). Only been there a month and I hope I don't get fired. Worrying about it keeps me up at night so I come in all tired to work and aren't as productive leading me to think that there's even more reason for me to get fired

Anyhoo, I think once I make it 6 months before getting fired then I know that I'm good to go -- I'll have enough experience to have an easier time of finding a job. Just five more months to go....

This website is pretty helpful and helped a DACA friend find some interviews.

Those daca-approved that are still students are very lucky! I highly advise you to get an internship, even if it is unpaid. I'm job searching right now, and I talked with a recruiter for temporary/contract positions, and she definitely stated I was at a disadvantage not having any experience in the industry. Unfortunately in my field, all the internships I saw were paid while I was a student, which I was not eligible for. I tried to make up for it by having a broad range of academic research experience, but employers like to see real job experience. I will just keep looking, and hopefully find something soon. I just spoke to the recruiter today and the one job opening that matched me the employer wants someone with permanent residence or US citizen because they don't want to sponsor. I tried to explain to her that I don't need sponsorship, but she didn't seem to grasp it.

A friend of mine was getting anxious because she's about to graduate and had yet to find an internship (aka no experience in her field) and finally she was able to find one but it was unpaid. She accepted and after it was over they offered her a job. So it could truly be worth it and even if no job is offered it's still great experience. Best of luck Swim!

For CS it's extremely easy to find internships.
Other engineering, usually you have to rely on school's news. Most of them happen to be government type.
IBM is everywhere btw.

I agree, companies basically look for you instead of the other way around.

It happens that way with some recruiters, they don't want to take the time to research DACA. Hang in there, you'll find something

Congrats on getting the gig! You should view it differently though, give it all you've got and you may just have yourself a permanent position
