You can get credit even without a social security number. You can also get a credit report without a social security number.

It's technically not required but banks love to have this info. Initially the SSN card even said it was not to be used for identification purposes. But that was ignored and so the notice was removed (www.quizzle.com).

Mistakes happen. Since the SSN is not required they use other methods to match you to your report. I discussed this more in depth previously somewhere. But this gives you a good idea of what can happen:
http://www.experian.com/ask-experian...r-and-son.html

Basically they try to catch you and all your accounts based on whatever info you provided. Sometimes they do it wrong (it's automated for the most part). Since AMEX claims there's no card with that SSN I would assume the credit reporting agency made a mistake and merged your file with someone elses.

I can see my DISCOVER card, and my sallie mae loan on the report.

Please everybody, check your credit report with your new Social Security Number.

You can use the website I provided or your own method.

I will contact AMEX tomorrow morning and find out what is going on. My hypothesis is that my SS# was random generated back in the day like the one you buy in NY and has been used all this time.

The person using the same SS# as me is a nice person, all payments are good, but I need to resolve this issue since you never know what can happen.

Any input or experience on this? Can I sue AMEX? =)

Edit: I was thinking about this and it may be an error with the website but my friend told me it is 100% accurate.

But the website asked for my last 4 SS# which can be the same as a different social number.

Any ideas?

How old are you ?

Creditors don't give 2 shits about your social, they will match whatever they have on file to common names, addresses and a bunch of other data they can use. You're not the only one with issues like these, which is why credit bureaus have a "dispute" links.

Also, creditkarma is well... not your real credit score by a long shot.

I am 22 years old.

Creditkarma was correct because I checked my credit report with Transunion and they found the AMEX card under my social and the loan. You are right that creditkarma may not give you the best credit score but it will show everything you have under your social. Yes you are correct it can be an error by the credit berau Transunion. This is why I opened a dispute with them.

No, the score they gave you is correct. However it is not the score that banks use. Best you can do with the CK score is get a very general idea of how well you are doing.

I got my report back from the dispute I opened. They just erased the loan and credit card from my credit history. My credit score went down due to this.

It's better that way, you don't know if the other person happens to default or even worse file for bankruptcy. It's better to take a point reduction now, than an even worse situation in the future.

Yeah you are right, but I screwed up. Aside from the Loan and the Amex card I disputed, I also said that another credit card does not belong to me. Realized it was my Visa card after my dispute. Stupid report did not say Visa or anything, it calls it some weird name. It was deleted from my credit report but I think eventually it will come up again. I barely use it anyway.
