I'm familiar with this situation because my father had the same issue where they wouldn't take out Federal taxes. Legally, they don't have to, but you are still held responsible when tax time comes around.

I would talk with HR or your boss about it. They do something and take the taxes out. Otherwise, save up some money to pay them when tax time comes around.

It could be that you're not making enough and/or put a bunch of dependents on your W-4 form to be charged federal taxes. They should still be taking off SS and Medicare.

If you feel that you would owe taxes, refill the W-4 and put a lower number, or you can ask for them to take off additional fed taxes.

Did you have to fill out a W4 before you commenced your employment there? Look at your paystub. Does it specifically say $0 under the SS and Medicare column in particular?

She is going to be in deep deep shit come the end of the year when she has to file her W-3 forms. Remember, that 6.2% and 1.45% SS and Medicare withholding from your paycheck is only half the equation. The employer has to contribute to that too. You will also be in deep shit if you haven't saved money to pay your taxes....

This lady needs to go to a CPA, quick.

Sounds like it but the IRS can still come after them and ask why. They are very strict about who can pass as an independent contractor vs. an employee.
