People, don't go crazy applying for credit cards. You only need a major one (secured credit card) and a store one like Walmart or JC Penney. I wouldn't get anymore than that for now.

I doubt anyone here is going crazy over applying credit cards. The only problem is that we're getting rejected. What else to do but to apply another?

I understand people say applying/rejected too much hurts your credit, but how do you build a credit when each of your application got rejected.

I agree that you only need one major credit card. But if you read what people are saying is that their applications are getting rejected.

For example, I applied to Capital One, rejected so I tried Chase, also reject. I had send in my application for Discover. If this fails also, I don't know how would I build credit.

I remember I had no credit until I got my first cell phone (back in 1999, yes.) Because I had no credit the guy told me I had to give a $200 deposit since a phone was sort of like a credit card and they didn't want me to make a bunch of LD calls or drop the contract.

2 months later, I started getting applications for credit cards in the mail. Granted they were shitty credit cards like Providian (later bought by Chase) with a high interest rate but it was nice to get a card.

Those store cards are also a good way to get started. Just apply to a few.

I already had a credit card through Bank of America that I was able to open before with my Itin number, they gave me $600 limit to start with and now I am at $3000! So anyways, after I got my social security I tried applying for a Macy's card and it got denied. I called Macy's and they said they were not able to verify my identity, they were not able to verify my social security number with the 3 companies that monitors your credit: equifax, transunion, and experian. I called those companies and they asked me to send them a copy of my valid driver's license or id along with my social security number. Well I did that and one company already stablished my identity and my credit score, another one is giving me a headache saying that I have to send it again, so I did on Monday, calling them today. And the third one, experian, there is no way to talk to them on the phone unless if you are already in their system, so I am sending them another letter this week. 2 down 1 to go. Bottom line is, u will not be able to get any credit card unless these 3 companies have your info. Also, certain jobs such as hospitals etc, ask thoses companies for your information to check you credit and also your identity. Good luck!
You were suppose to transfer your credit history from your ITIN to your new SSN

I think this is why I was having problems. I also have a credit card with bank of america. I'm just trying to open another credit card because I'm not happy with bank of america card. I sent my letter to 3 credit companies and still waiting to have my info changed from transunion. Hopefully this solves my problem with getting denied because of invalid ssn. Anyway good luck to you too! thanks

Hey everyone!
I wanted to follow up on this.
I applied for a few cards and got denied. And it's mostly due to Experian (The aholes in the credit business).
After some inquiring i found out that they have my college id# as my ssn. They wont change it because they said i have to have credit for that number to get replaced by my real ssn. It's so frustrating because in order to build credit, you have to be approved for credit, however you keep getting denied because there's not history of you. It's a catch 22.

Can any one update on this?

Start credit with a walmart store card.

This is false information, inquiries do not hurt your credit. I had over 8 inquiries and recently applied for a Discover It/Chase Freedom/AMEX and was approved on all. You have to build credit with a secured cc first or using a co signer. Not paying your credit bill on time is possibly the thing that harms your credit the most. By the way, my credit score is over 735, I started with the capitol one platinum secured card with a $200 limit, they recently gave me a $800 credit limit increase, thus making it unsecured now.

I only have a debit with BOA. Had it for a long time now. No CC so far.
Thats fine, but youll never have credit history just using a debit card. Credit history is there for a reason for when you want to buy a home or car.
