Fellas, memorable day today for me. I will use this thread to document my experience with AP. My Advance Parole application was received by USCIS on September 8th, 2014 and approved on October 29th, 2014. I have been granted AP for humanitarian reasons. I would like to meet my grandfather. I will be traveling to the Republic of India at the end of next month. I asked for 45 days and currently waiting for the AP papers to verify how much time I was given. The next course of action for me is to apply for the visa which shouldn't be a problem at all. The process of applying for AP was extremely simple. Just provided a simple letter from the doctor which was scanned and e-mailed to me. Wrote out a simple formal letter explaining why I'm applying for AP, when I'm planning on traveling and signed it. One interesting thing is that at one point I had both my EAD renewal and this AP application pending with USCIS and am glad that none of the apps was delayed because of the other. I'll update this with my actual travel experiences later.

Update:
Happy new year everyone! Just a quick update to share my AP experience. I left the United States on Nov 24th, 2014 from New York's JFK Intl Airport and flew directly to New Delhi, India. No problems whatsoever departing obviously. Had the time of my life back home. I got to meet my grandfather after 16 odd years. My cousins and relatives treated me like a king and showed me around. I was scheduled to arrive back to the United States on December 18th, 2014. I had to extend my trip as I decided to go through a major Cornea operation. I was very lucky that my AP was valid till January 15th, 2015. I arrived back to the US this morning, January 9th, 2015. The process was extremely smooth. Went through the visitors line. Presented my passport, 821D approval letter, AP approval letter to the first officer. He then escorted me to a separate room with more officers in front processing papers for everyone. My name was called and I was told that I am all set. Absolutely NO questions were asked. Overall, very successful trip. I got a major surgery done and got to meet my entire family.

I'm sure this is a monumental moment for you! I actually traveled twice on AP for a period of two weeks each time for work. Leaving the US is no problem, no one asks you for anything just your passport to check you in. I'm assuming you have a passport to the country you're heading to, so they won't bother you once you land there.

When leavening the country you are visiting, they will ask for your AP and may question why you were visiting, for how long, etc.. It's not bad or scary at all. They just need to verify your documents and identity and that you are indeed allowed back into the US. (You are because you have your AP) Once in the US, you will have to go through passport control (make sure to go on the visitor line). They will check your passport, scan your fingerprints and glance at your AP. After, they will take you to "the room" where an immigration officer will review your AP and stamp it. Both times they asked why I left the country. I told them for work. When I returned a few weeks ago he asked me how I plan to adjust my status, and jokingly asked if through marriage. I laughed and said no, that I will see. In "the room" they stamp your passport and you're free to go! The most important here is not to be nervous, they have no reason to not allow you in. I saw people in "the room" crying and sweating bullets and officers telling them to relax. The US is your home and you shouldn't have to worry a bit! The process took about 5 minutes for me each time (not including waiting on that damn passport control line).

I took copies of all documents with me, EAD, DACA, and renewal EAD and DACA receipts (for my second trip). I was not asked for any of these either time, but it won't hurt to bring a copy just in case. (I seriously doubt they will ask you)

Good luck back home. You are blessed to be able to see your grandfather, mine passed away while I was abroad for work and sadly will never see him again. :*(

Keep us posted on your return!

Thanks for the replies and advice! I hope I did not celebrate prematurely. Hopefully the consulate will not give me problems in granting a visa. Hoping for the best.

I am a Kenyan citizen my brah with a Kenyan passport. That's the only slight worry I have because they have special rules for non-US nationals and the Indian consulate is known to give shit to people all the time. Will keep this thread updated for sure. What do you mean you're worried with the port of entry/exit? If I get the visa, I plan to enter at Ahmedabad, Gujarat. Also would anyone know the implications of a layover in a third country ?
