So I'll be traveling to Phoenix, AZ from Los Angeles in a month.

I don't know what's going on there. I remember they had the SB1070 and you need to be a US citizen to be there.

Anyone know if there are checkpoints on the borders and do they check for ID?

I don't want to be held up even though I am legally here.

I don't know about Arizona specifically but anywhere within a 100 miles of the border, Border Patrol has the right to get your info. (unless you watch those "AM I BEING DETAINED? AM I BEING DETAINED?" videos.

There's a Customs checkpoint between LA and Phoenix (I-10), so don't carry any fruits, vegetables, or liquor with you.

There is most definitely a Border Patrol checkpoint between San Diego and Phoenix (I-8/), so don't use that route. I mean, eventually you'll be fine, but I've been held there for hours because BP agents didn't understand what DACA was (... apparently).

I traveled from Oakland to Phoenix, albeit via airplane, in November and there was no friction at the airport arriving/departing. It might be wise to bring copies of your EAD and DACA approval letters in case you are approached en route.

I've travelled between AZ and CA a couple times a year. I have never encountered a CBP checkpoint. But recently, I am getting so nervous everytime when I get to the area between Quazesite and Blythe. They actually have a random checkpoint every once in while to search for drug smuggling. If you google using keywords "Blythe border patrol checkpoint" or something like that, you will see some news about the checkpoint. Beside that, AZ is not really what everyone thinks. But do not go down to Tucson. I hope this helps.
